The Sensitive Areas Horseshoe Crab dataset shows areas within Maryland's Coastal Bays that are significant for Horseshoe Crab breeding populations. Horseshoe Crabs use sandy beach areas for breeding. The coverage differentiates potential breeding habitat (hcrab_rank=3) from confirmed breeding locations (hcrab_rank=5).

The dataset focusing on research publications related to the American horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) and ecological studies over multiple decades. The dataset contains detailed information about individual research publications, including: Year and Decade of publication. Publication Title and a Link to access the document. Classification of publications based on their relation to either Ecology/Management/Conservation or Physiology/Morphology/Genetics/Evolution.

These data sets exist in raster and vector formats. The areas in this data set were derived from sitings called in and tracked by Steve Doctor at Matapeake. These sitings were located as points on a map that were contributed by Mr. Doctor and Nancy Butowski, DNR Fisheries Service. Professional guidance was provided by Nancy Butowski and Steve Doctor. The areas were then located on the VIMS shoreline data set and exported as an independent data set. These data sets were then converted to raster format and reclassified with a rank determined by DNR biologists. This rank determines level of habitat importance with spawning areas ranking highest and adult areas of bay depth below 3 feet ranking the lowest. These ranked rasters were then stacked and an output raster was created showing areas of high habitat diversity. These rasters were then clipped by county.

An invasive crab inventory survey was performed to document the abundance and spatial distribution of the European green crab (Carcinus maenas) and the Japanese shore crab (Hemigrapsus sanguineus) at Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS) which forms the eastern boundaries of Chincoteague and Sinepuxent Bays. Three habitat types (rocky, vegetated and unvegetated) are present within the Chincoteague and Sinepuxent Bays. Each habitat type was sampled to determine if different habitat types support different populations of these invasive crabs. Rocky habitat is known to be limited in these bays and there are only seven known locations of this habitat type. Crab traps were placed at randomly assigned stations where tidal elevations are within the known range and preferences of the invasive crabs. Throughout two surveys representing July and September conditions, 15 species were collected and only one species was identified as an invasive crab. Only three C. maenas were captured throughout the project. These individuals were captured during the July survey at one of the rocky habitat stations. No invasive crab species were collected at either the vegetated or unvegetated habitats. Discrete water quality parameters that were measured during the initial deployment indicate that temperature and salinity at the survey stations may be at the extreme end of this species tolerance.

This data set consists of field data collected as part of the study to examine estimation of diamond-backed terrapins and commercial blue crap trapping. Data consists of metadata, CSV, and spatial information (raster and vector) provided as a geodatabase.

The Sensitive Areas Scallop dataset shows areas within Maryland's Coastal Bays that are significant for Scalloppopulations. The assumption is that an area's importance to Scallops is related to the density of SAV beds. The data set is based on 1999 Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) coverage dataset that was produced at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science from aerial photography flown in 1999. It is a portion of the full SAV dataset that extends back to 1971. These data provide an accurate high-resolution shoreline compiled from imagery of Crab Bank, Charleston Harbor, SC . This vector shoreline data is based on an office interpretation of imagery that may be suitable as a geographic information system (GIS) data layer. This metadata describes information for both the line and point shapefiles. The NGS attribution scheme 'Coastal Cartographic Object Attribute Source Table (C-COAST)' was developed to conform the attribution of various sources of shoreline data into one attribution catalog. C-COAST is not a recognized standard, but was influenced by the International Hydrographic Organization's S-57 Object-Attribute standard so the data would be more accurately translated into S-57. The Mercury Passage marine habitat layer1: 25,000 depicts marine habitats from Cape Bougainville [148 00, -42 30] to Schouten Island [148 19, --42 20] from the coastline to the 40 metre depth. The habitat types depicted in the dataset include High profile reef, Medium profile reef, Low profile Reef, Patchy Reef, Sand, Hard Sand, Silty Sand, Silt, Seagrass, Patchy Seagrass, and Sparse Seagrass. The data was collected through intensive field sampling from November 2004 to December 2005 by marine researchers at the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute. The use of underwater camera equipment, echo sounder data and a Differential GPS unit allowed for the extensive area to be surveyed. The dataset is intended to be used to fulfil coastal management objectives according to The Living Marine Resources Act 1995.
