To examine biodiversity trends over time, a master list was compiled of all benthic invertebrate species collected from the Narragansett Bay beginning with Totten’s 1834 descriptions of mollusks, Leidy’s collections in 1855, Verrill and Smith’s surveys beginning in 1871, and studies at Alexander Agassiz’s Newport Marine Zoological Laboratory, 1873–1910. The list, spanning 182 years, was compiled from 104 sources and includes invertebrate macrofauna (>0.5 mm) and more limited studies of meiofauna. It currently holds over 1,200 unique taxa from 21 phyla. Information given for each collection record includes: current accepted scientific name, when and where sampled, by whom (with citation), gear used, and full taxonomic hierarchy. These data provide a basis for additional studies that includes sampling of the benthos in Nelson and/or Izembek lagoons. These data are important as historic information useful in examining long-term changes in the lagoons in light of changing climate.

Beginning in late 1979, the Alabama Coastal Area Board (CAB) funded a series of baseline surveys on the coastal resources of Alabama, from which they could develop a monitoring program to observe any significant changes in the resources over time. Eight stations within Mobile Bay, Alabama were sampled monthly from April 1980 to April 1981. Data collected included samples for benthic fauna, pelagic fauna, sediment particle size, total organic carbon, foraminifera, zooplankton, phytoplankton, chlorophyll, turbidity, river flow, and hydrographic parameters. The subset of data presented here are for the benthic fauna, which were sampled by 0.1 m^2 Peterson grab. Fauna were enumerated and identified to the lowest taxon possible, and mainly included crustaceans, molluscs, polychaetes, and echinoderms. Data in readily accessible digital form are available from April 1980 to February 1981.

Raw data from the benthic macroinvertebrate surveys conducted in Saginaw Bay in 2006-2009, and in Lake Huron, including Georgian Bay and North Channel, in 2007 and 2012. These basic benthic survey data provide number of each taxon in each replicate sample (abundance), density, and biomass.
