This publication describes the methodologies used by the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), to collect, prepare, and analyze information on drug-related emergency department (ED) visits in the United States. The methods described here were initiated in 2004 and are current as of 2011.

This collection includes materials used to conduct the survey, reports on how the survey was conducted, and reports on how the data were processed. The Statistical Inference Report details how the data were analyzed for reports and tables, which may be useful for data users looking to do their own analysis.New items are added to the collection as they become available, so resources published in a previous MRB may not yet be available for 2021. The Drug Listing Act of 1972 requires registered drug establishments to provide the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with a current list of all drugs manufactured, prepared, propagated, compounded, or processed by it for commercial distribution. Drug products are identified and reported using a unique, three-segment number, called the National Drug Code (NDC), which serves as a universal product identifier for drugs.
