Detroit Water & Sewerage waste water discharge event location data (2008-2014). Information on location and function of various structures involved with discharging effluent collected by the Detroit Water & Sewerage Department. Combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharge event data from 2008-2014 (2014 data are recorded through June) is available (data are to be interpreted in millions of gallons).

NOTE: This dataset is no longer updated. Due to a change in databases, overflows after after January 31, 2023 are reported at https://opendata.maryland.gov/dataset/Reported-Sewer-Overflows-New-for-2023-/stgj-u72u/data_preview Reported sewer overflows from January 1, 2005 through January 31, 2023. Although MDE requires that all public sewer system owners or operators report overflows to us, there may be incidents that were not reported. Note that overflow amounts provided by the person reporting the overflow may be estimated using best professional judgment or they may be actual readings from flow measurement devices when available. Penalty information started during 2013.

This data layer identifies the locations of Combined sewer overflow outfalls. Combined sewer systems are sewers that are designed to collect rainwater runoff, domestic sewage, and industrial wastewater in the same pipe. Most of the time, combined sewer systems transport all of their wastewater to a sewage treatment plant, where it is treated and then discharged to a water body. During periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt, however, the wastewater volume in a combined sewer system can exceed the capacity of the sewer system or treatment plant. For this reason, combined sewer systems are designed to overflow occasionally and discharge excess untreated wastewater directly to nearby streams, rivers, or other water bodies.
