The data are included in 8 separate text files. 1) "Sample_coordinates.txt". The file contains sample identifiers along with geographic coordinates associated with each sample. Coordinates are specified as UTM Zone 10 values (WGS84). 2) "Sample_genotypes.txt". The file contains a sample identifier along with microsatellite genotypes associated with each sample. 3) "uniform_conductances.asc". An ASCII text-based representation of a map containing idealized habitat for Northern Spotted Owls. 4) "1870_conductance.asc". An ASCII text-based representation of a map containing idealized habitat for Northern Spotted Owls in the 1870's. 5) "1940_conductance.asc". An ASCII text-based representation of a map containing idealized habitat for Northern Spotted Owls in the 1840's. 6) "1986_conductance.asc". An ASCII text-based representation of a map containing idealized habitat for Northern Spotted Owls in 1986. 7) "1994_conductance.asc". An ASCII text-based representation of a map containing idealized habitat for Northern Spotted Owls in 1994. 8) "2012_conductance.asc". Two tables of data are included in this data release. The first table provides screening results for 32 previously described and/or published microsatellites and 1 sexing marker, primer redesigns for use in Mexican Spotted Owls in this data release, and size of markers in Mexican Spotted Owls. The second table provides microsatellite and sexing marker results for 10 tissue and 98 feather samples for 11 microsatellite markers identified as variable in initial marker screenings.

The dataset was created to document short-eared owl observations which occurred during the kit fox spotlighting routes.

These data were compiled to allow examination of northern spotted owl territorial occupancy dynamics, especially with regards to the roles played by habitat and competition with barred owl in past and future dynamics. Data are estimates of parameters derived from previous modelling of northern spotted owl territorial occupancy dynamics. These data were collected as part of monitoring of northern spotted owl demography. Associated code allows analysis of these estimates to understand the roles of competition and habitat in recent northern spotted owl declines and to predict the future of northern spotted owl under various management scenarios.

Data collected from 1995 to 2014 are partitioned into 2-week periods from 1 March – 31 August each year, totaling 12 possible sampling periods per year. Data collected from 2015 and 2016 are partitioned into 2-month periods from 1 March – 31 August, totaling 3 possible sampling periods each year. This dataset also describes the proportion of total area surveyed per site per sampling period in 2015 and 2016, as well as the proportion of each site with older coniferous forest in each year (1995 – 2016).
