EK60 Water Column Sonar Data Collected During DS0903
Spring 2009 CalCOFI. The California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) are a unique partnership of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, NOAA Fisheries Service and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The organization was formed in 1949 to study the ecological aspects of the sardine population collapse off California. Today our focus has shifted to the study of the marine environment off the coast of California, the management of its living resources, and monitoring the indicators of El Nino and climate change. CalCOFI conducts quarterly cruises off southern and central California, collecting a suite of hydrographic and biological data on station and underway. Data collected at depths down to 500 m include: temperature, salinity, oxygen, phosphate, silicate, nitrate and nitrite, chlorophyll, transmissometer, PAR, C14 primary productivity, phytoplankton biodiversity, zooplankton biomass, and zooplankton biodiversity.

California Current Ecosystem (CCE) Survey. The Jordan conducted operations in the Southern California Bight as well as occupying stations north of Point Conception up to Monterey Bay. The CCE Survey was conducted as a two ship synoptic survey of the western US coast of North America. The NOAA vessel Miller Freeman conducted similar operations over the northern section of the CCE during the same period.

2008 Summer CCE. The California Current Ecosystem Survey (CCES) was a two ship synoptic survey of the western U.S. coast of North America. The first survey (using the NOAA Ships David Starr Jordan, DSJ, and Miller Freeman, MF) was conducted in spring (MF working north to south from April 1 – May 3 and DSJ working south to north from March 24 – May 1, 2008). The second survey using only the David Starr Jordan extended the survey into the summer season (DSJ working north to south from July 6 – August 20, 2008), repeating most of the transect lines of the April survey, and applying the same methodologies. Although the primary objective was to collect data required for the biomass estimate of Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax), additional data were collected to describe the pelagic ecosystem across a range of trophic levels.

Determine the selectivity characteristics of the Nordic 264 midwater trawl in relation to potential escapement of coastal pelagic species (CPS) between Newport, Oregon and San Diego, California. The following are specific objectives for this survey. I.D.1. Continuously sample pelagic fish eggs using the Continuous Underway Fish Egg Sampler (CUFES). The data will be used to locate potential adult CPS schools to fish on in the evening hours. I.D.2. Continuously sample multi-frequency acoustic backscatter using the Simrad EK60. The data will be used to locate potential CPS targets to fish on during the evening hours. I.D.3. Continuously sample sea-surface temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll-a using a thermosalinometer and fluorometer. These data will be used to estimate the physical oceanographic habitats for target species. I.D.4. Continuously sample air temperature, barometric pressure, and wind speed and direction using an integrated weather station. I.D.5. Sample fish near the surface each night by conducting 2-5 surface trawls at stations or random sites selected each night by the Chief Scientist (CS). The data will be used to determine the selectivity characteristics of the Nordic 264 midwater trawl for CPS. I.D.6. Conduct 24 hrs of Saildrone comparison operations to validate carbon, fisheries acoustics, ADCP, oceanographic, and meteorological sensors integrated onto the Saildrone UAS.
