ES60 Water Column Sonar Data Collected During NBS17VA
Upon completing the 2017 Eastern Bering Sea Continental Shelf Bottom Trawl Survey of Groundfish and Invertebrate Resources, the Resource Assessment and Conservation Engineering Division (RACE) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) extended survey operations to the northern Bering Sea, including the area of the Bering Sea shelf from the northern extent of the standard survey (approximately 40 nm north of St. Matthew Island) north to the Bering Strait and covering Norton Sound as well. The southwest portion of the northern extension was last surveyed in 2006, while RACE last surveyed Norton Sound in 1991.

The tenth in a series of comprehensive bottom trawl surveys of groundfish resources in the Aleutian Islands (AI) region was conducted from June 1 through August 11, 2006, by the Resource Assessment and Conservation Engineering (RACE) Division of the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC), in Seattle, Washington. Since 2000 this survey has been conducted biennially; earlier surveys were conducted on a mostly triennial schedule between 1980 and 2000.

The eighth biennial groundfish assessment survey of the Aleutian Islands region was conducted during the summer of 2016 by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center’s (AFSC) Resource Assessment and Conservation Engineering Division’s Groundfish Assessment Program (RACE-GAP). This effort constitutes the fourteenth in the full series dating from 1980. The survey area covered the continental shelf and upper continental slope to 500 m in the Aleutian Archipelago from Islands of Four Mountains (170° W long.) to Stalemate Bank (170° E long.), including Petrel Bank and Petrel Spur (180° long.), and the northern side of the Aleutian Islands between Unimak Pass (165° W long.) and the Islands of Four Mountains. The survey was conducted aboard two chartered trawlers, the FV Alaska Provider and FV Sea Storm. Samples were collected successfully at 419 survey stations using standard RACE Division PolyNor’Eastern high-opening bottom trawl nets with rubber bobbin roller gear.

The Resource Assessment and Conservation Engineering (RACE) Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) conducted the Eastern Bering Sea Continental Shelf Bottom Trawl Survey of Groundfish and Invertebrate Resources from May 31, 2017 to August 07, 2017. This cruise continued the annual series of eastern Bering Sea crab and groundfish stock assessment surveys, which began in 1971. The survey covered the Bering Sea shelf between the depths of 20 and 200 m from Bristol Bay northward to latitude 62° N.
