Geohydrology data for groundwater analysis in the Lake Superior Watershed
This child item contains geology and hydrogeology data used in the hydrogeologic characterization of the Lake Superior watershed and a shapefile of water budget zones for reporting water budget terms for Lake Superior. The geology data include shapefiles of bedrock units from the USGS Geologic map database (Horton, 2017) and surficial geology units from Soller and others (2012). A compilation of hydrogeologic properties (hydraulic conductivity and transmissivity) from a variety of studies in and around the Lake Superior basin and from a field study conducted in 2021 is included in a data table and the values are applied to the bedrock and surficial unit shapefiles. We also include here a zipped grid of simulated groundwater discharge to surface water (rivers and streams) extracted from the Zell and Sanford (2020) MODFLOW6 model of the shallow groundwater in the United States. The sources of data used in the compilation of properties also are included.

This vector geospatial dataset contains bounding polygons that visualize the domain of archived groundwater flow models published by the Upper Midwest Water Science Center and attributes pertaining to the associated publication (citation, year of publication, authors, report ID, publication URL), model construction details, and a URL for publicly available model archives when available or a directory pathway for internal model archives. The index currently depicts 115 groundwater model domains across Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin from publications dating back to 1985. Separately published groundwater transport models are not included in this dataset.

Western Lake Erie Restoration Assessment Degree Flowlines

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) created geospatial datasets of potential culvert locations along with flowlines connected to southwestern Lake Erie as part of the Western Lake Erie Restoration Assessment (WLERA). The Degree Flowlines and Culverts datasets represent the flowline network and culverts in the WLERA study area. Both datasets will be served in the Great Lakes Wetlands Restoration Area mapping application [https://glcwra.wim.usgs.gov/]. The map-based user interface can be used by stakeholders to find potential areas for successful wetlands restoration. Each flowline was assigned a connectivity score describing its level of connectedness to Lake Erie. Low numbers represent fewer disconnections, such as culverts or road crossings, between the reach and the water body requiring no flow network modification to restore the area.
