The National Census of Ferry Operators (NCFO) Routes dataset was collected through December 31, 2020 and compiled on October 16, 2024 from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). The Ferry Routes dataset represents all ferry routes from operators that provided responses to the 2020 National Census of Ferry Operators. Areas covered by the dataset include the 50 states as well as the territories of Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Island, and American Samoa. Each segment in the dataset connects to two terminals from the Ferry Terminals dataset, describing the route ferries travel between them. Route geometries were determined using GPS points from Automatic Identification System data, as well existing government datasets from the Census Bureau, the US Geological Survey, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, and the US Army Corps of Engineers. Other routes were determined using least-cost analysis.

Per Engineering Regulation 1130-2-520, USACEâs NDC and WCSC are responsible for collecting, compiling, printing, and distributing all domestic waterborne commerce statistics for which the USACE has responsibility. Per a 1998 Office of Management and Budget (OMB) memorandum, the WCSC inherited the requirement to include foreign waterborne commerce formally executed by the U.S. Census Bureau. Performance of this work is in accordance with the Rivers and Harbors Appropriation Act of 1922 (33 USC 555). Engineering Regulation 1130-2-520 defines a port as: (1) Port limits defined by legislative enactments of state, county, or city governments. (2) The corporate limits of a municipality. The Commercial Strategic Seaports dataset was compiled on October 04, 2021 from the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). The National Port Readiness Network (NPRN) consists of Strategic Commercial Seaports able to support force deployment during contingencies and other defense emergencies. Nine federal agencies and organizations, USDOT/Maritime Administration (MARAD), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC), U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), Military Sea-lift Command (MSC), U.S. Army Forces Command (USFORSCOM), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM), and U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) are responsible for providing guidance to the NPRN program and for supporting the secure movement of military forces through U.S. ports. This dataset includes all 18 commercial ports that currently belong to the NPRN.

The USGS Transportation downloadable data from The National Map (TNM) is based on TIGER/Line data provided through U.S. Census Bureau and supplemented with HERE road data to create tile cache base maps. Some of the TIGER/Line data includes limited corrections done by USGS. Transportation data consists of roads, railroads, trails, airports, and other features associated with the transport of people or commerce. The data include the name or route designator, classification, and location. Transportation data support general mapping and geographic information system technology analysis for applications such as traffic safety, congestion mitigation, disaster planning, and emergency response. The National Map transportation data is commonly combined with other data themes, such as boundaries, elevation, hydrography, and structures, to produce general reference base maps. The National Map viewer allows free downloads of public domain transportation data in either Esri File Geodatabase or Shapefile formats. The National Census of Ferry Operators (NCFO) Terminals dataset was collected through December 31, 2020 and compiled on October 16, 2024 from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). The Ferry Terminals dataset represents all ferry terminals from operators that provided responses to the 2020 National Census of Ferry Operators. Areas covered by the dataset include the 50 states as well as the territories of Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Island, and American Samoa. The terminals represent departure and arrival locations for ferry segments in the NCFO. As part of the NCFO questionnaire, respondents were asked terminal name, city, and state. From this information, longitude and latitudes were obtained through open, online searches that include operator websites and map platforms such as Google Maps and Open Street Maps. As a result, termina sometimes do not represent the exact location where ferry vessels dock but may represent other locations such as the operatorâs business location or alternative docking locations. However, whenever possible, the terminal locations represent departure and arrival points for that ferry segment. Each terminal contains information about its operation and ownership status, in addition to geographic location and transportation connections, whenever operators provided this information.

These feature classes reside within the SOCECON Feature Data Set of the Great Lakes - Straits of Mackinac 2019 ESI geodatabase. They contain vector polygons, lines and points representing navigation/marine area resource data for the Great Lakes - Straits of Mackinac study area. The study area includes the Straits of Mackinac, nearby portions of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, and adjacent lands and waters in northern Michigan. These data sets contain information about the following resources: POLYLINES - ferry routes; POINTS - boat ramps, ferries, lock and dams, marinas, and ports; POLYGONS - access sites and anchorages. Object specific Type and Source information are stored in the related data tables, SOC_DAT and SOURCES (described below). These are stand-alone tables within the Geodatabase, designed to be used in conjunction with these spatial data layers. This data set is a portion of the ESI data for Great Lakes - Straits of Mackinac study area. As a whole, the ESI data characterize the marine and coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil, and include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources.
