HMSRP Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Data
Metadata collected during UAS flights for Hawaiian monk seal research purposes. This dataset includes date, time, location, duration, platform type, and other attributes of the operations themselves and data collected on UAS flight disturbance to seabirds and seals. This does not reflect data collected from packages onboard the UAS platform such as photos, video, LIDAR or other.

HMSRP Hawaiian Monk Seal Handling Data

This data set contains records for all handling and measurement of Hawaiian monk seals since 1981. Live seals are handled and measured during a variety of events including tagging, instrumenting, disentangling, translocation, and health screening by PSD personnel and cooperating scientists as part of the ongoing monk seal population assessment and recovery efforts. In addition, this data set contains measurements of dead seals collected during necropsy and handlings for all seals that were tagged by USFWS in earlier years, and still present in the population when the current research effort began. These handling records extend as far back as 1967. The remainder of the USFWS handling data (data for seals that disappeared prior to the inception of the PSD research program) are housed at PIFSC in paper form.

The dataset is a reanalysis of historical data from the AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) sensor onboard the NOAA polar orbiting satellite constellation, that have been improved using extensive calibration, validation and other information to yield a consistent research quality time series for global climate studies. At 0.05 degrees per pixel (approximately 4 km/pixel), this dataset provides a global spatial coverage ranging from October 1981 - 2009. Our data holdings include descending passes (nighttime). The data is available as monthly and weekly composites, as well as a monthly climatology, at a spatial resolution of 0.05 degrees. The geographic coverage extends for the entire globe.

As a part of PacIOOS, ocean gliders provide very detailed information about the physical and chemical condition of the waters around the Hawaiian Islands. Additionally, these data get used in computer models to make predictions about currents. Ocean gliders are small, free-swimming, unmanned vehicles that can cruise the ocean for several months gathering information about the temperature, salinity, and other water properties between the surface and 1000 m depth. A pressure sensor on the glider is able to record the depth throughout the dive. Because gliders are unmanned, they communicate with scientists on land when they are at the surface using an antenna on the end of the glider. The SeaGlider autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) was designed at the University of Washington (UW) Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). These data are taken from Mission 1 of SeaGlider 523.

This dataset contains counts of fish species taken in trawl hauls of NOAA R/V Townsend Cromwell for cruises TC 33, TC 35, TC 36 and TC 40. Trawl operations took place in the Main Hawaiian Islands. Trawl date, latitude and longitude were not collected for this data set, but using the vessel code, cruise number and station number, these data fields were inserted into this data set from RI008 (InPort ID 5835).

AIS Ship Traffic: Mariana and Wake: 2011-2012

Ship position data from a satellite-based Automatic Identification System (AIS) were obtained jointly by PacIOOS (J. Potemra), SOEST/ORE of the University of Hawaii (E. Roth), and the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument (PNMN) (D. Graham) through a one-time purchase from ORBCOMM LLC. The purchase agreement was made in late 2012 and was for a 30-by-30 degree section of historical AIS data that included the region of the Mariana Islands. The data include AIS long and unchecked reports for a one year period: August 2011 through mid-August 2012. The raw, monthly GPS files were locally converted to NetCDF for the PacIOOS data servers. Due to vendor constraints, release of the raw data is limited.

Ship traffic for the State of Hawaii, identifying the number of times a vessel occupied each square kilometer during the period 2008-2009. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an internationally-recognized shipboard broadcast system that communicates information to shore-based stations and other AIS-equipped ships. The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has developed rules applicable to both U.S. and foreign vessels that require owners and operators of most commercial vessels to install and use AIS to increase security and safety of maritime transportation. PacIOOS obtained AIS data from the USCG Nationwide AIS (NAIS) project. While specific times for ship locations were redacted, the data represent a cumulation over the two-year period 2008-2009 from which ship frequency was computed at 1-km resolution.
