The Medicare COVID-19 Hospitalization Trends dataset contains aggregate information from Medicare Fee-for-Service claims, Medicare Advantage encounter, and Medicare enrollment data. It provides insight around the groups of beneficiaries that were hospitalized at different points during the pandemic. CMS publicly released the first Preliminary Medicare COVID-19 Snapshot in June 2020 during the early stages of the Public Health Emergency for COVID-19. That report focused on COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations data for Medicare beneficiaries with a COVID-19 diagnosis. Throughout 2020 and 2021, that report was subsequently updated with refreshed data 13 times. Beginning in October 2021, CMS shifted its public COVID-19 reporting away from cumulative case and hospitalization rates to hospitalization trends over time with the release of this report, the Medicare COVID-19 Hospitalization Trends Report. All prior releases of both the Preliminary Medicare COVID-19 Snapshot and the Medicare COVID-19 Hospitalization Trends Report are available for download in the Medicare COVID-19 Data - Prior Releases file.

The HCUP Visualization of Inpatient Trends in COVID-19 and Other Conditions displays State-specific monthly trends in inpatient stays related to COVID-19 and other conditions, and facilitates comparisons of the number of hospital discharges, the average length of stays, and in-hospital mortality rates across patient/stay characteristics and States. This information is based on the HCUP State Inpatient Databases (SID), starting with 2018 data, plus newer annual and quarterly inpatient data, if and when available.

Description The MD COVID-19 - Number of Cases by Affected Congregate Facility data layer is a collection of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, group homes of 10 or more and state and local facilities where at least one positive COVID-19 test result has been reported for the reporting period. Data are reported to MDH by local health departments, the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services and the Department of Juvenile Services. To appear on the list, facilities report at least one confirmed case of COVID-19 over the prior 14 days. Facilities are removed from the list when health officials determine 14 days have passed with no new cases and no tests pending. The list provides a point-in-time picture of COVID-19 case activity among these facilities. Numbers reported for each facility listed reflect totals ever reported for cases. Data are updated once weekly. These are derived from reports with facility-level granularity across two main sources: (1) HHS TeleTracking, and (2) reporting provided directly to HHS Protect by state/territorial health departments on behalf of their healthcare facilities. The hospital population includes all hospitals registered with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as of June 1, 2020. It includes non-CMS hospitals that have reported since July 15, 2020. It does not include psychiatric, rehabilitation, Indian Health Service (IHS) facilities, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities, Defense Health Agency (DHA) facilities, and religious non-medical facilities. For a given entry, the term “collection_week” signifies the start of the period that is aggregated. For example, a “collection_week” of 2020-11-20 means the average/sum/coverage of the elements captured from that given facility starting and including Friday, November 20, 2020, and ending and including reports for Thursday, November 26, 2020. Reported elements include an append of either “_coverage”, “_sum”, or “_avg”. A “_coverage” append denotes how many times the facility reported that element during that collection week. A “_sum” append denotes the sum of the reports provided for that facility for that element during that collection week. A “_avg” append is the average of the reports provided for that facility for that element during that collection week. The file will be updated weekly. No statistical analysis is applied to impute non-response. For averages, calculations are based on the number of values collected for a given hospital in that collection week. Suppression is applied to the file for sums and averages less than four (4). In these cases, the field will be replaced with “-999,999”. This data is preliminary and subject to change as more data become available. Data is available starting on July 31, 2020. Sometimes, reports for a given facility will be provided to both HHS TeleTracking and HHS Protect. When this occurs, to ensure that there are not duplicate reports, deduplication is applied according to prioritization rules within HHS Protect. For influenza fields listed in the file, the current HHS guidance marks these fields as optional. As a result, coverage of these elements are varied. The National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP), a collaboration among CDC, federal partners, local and state health departments, and academic and private sector partners, is used to capture information during an Emergency Department (ED) visit. ED data can include information that are collected before cases are diagnosed or laboratory results are confirmed, providing an early warning system for infections, like COVID-19. This dataset includes reports of COVID-19-Like illness (CLI) and COVID-19 diagnosed during an ED visit. CLI is defined as fever and cough or shortness of breath or difficulty breathing with or without the presence of a coronavirus diagnosis code. Visits meeting the CLI definition that also have mention of flu or influenza are excluded. This dataset also includes ED visits among persons who have been diagnosed or laboratory confirmed to have COVID-19. During the initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic COVID-19 diagnoses counts are artificially low, due to varying eligibility requirements and availability of testing. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, public health best practices migrated from focusing on CLI to focusing on diagnosed cases. This dataset originally contained only CLI columns. In June 2021, the diagnosis columns were added, back filled to the start of the pandemic but with the caveat noted above. Roughly simultaneously, updating of the CLI columns was discontinued, although previously existing data were kept. Reflecting the new columns, the name of the dataset was changed from “COVID-Like Illness (CLI) Emergency Department Visits” to “COVID-Like Illness (CLI) and COVID-19 Diagnosis Emergency Department Visits” at the same time.
