There are 22 local historic districts within New Orleans/Orleans Parish, 18 administered by the New Orleans Historic District Landmarks Commission and four by the Central Business District Historic District Landmarks Commission. Esplanade Ridge and Treme' districts have both Partial and Full control.

Historic Zoning Districts for the City of New Orleans. This data is archived to show the status of zoning for parcels previous to changes made in August of 2012. Zoning regulates land use to promote smart growth and preserve the quality of life in communities. Permitted Use are allowed by right, subject to compliance with appropriate standards. Conditional Use require City Planning Commission review with a recommendation forwarded to the City Council for final action.

Following the 2020 Census, the New Orleans City Council passed ordinance MCS 28968 redistricting the City of New Orleans effective on the second Monday in January 2026. These static files can be used leading up to the change of official council districts on January 12, 2026. Included are a file geodatabase and independent shapefiles.

Locally designated historic places maintained by The Detroit Historic District Commission which is a city agency that was formed by Detroit Ordinance 161-H in 1976. Its purpose is to ensure the preservation of historically and culturally significant areas of the City which are designated by the City Council as Historic Districts. The Commission is made up of seven Detroit residents who are appointed by Mayor. These dedicated volunteers are generally residents of historic districts and represent such professions as architects and realtors. The Commission staff is located within the City of Detroit's Planning & Development Department.

The Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission administers a Certified Local Government (CLG) Grant Program for municipal historical preservation activities. Providence is one of eighteen Rhode Island communities that are Certified Local Governments. To qualify for CLG status, a community must have a historic district zoning ordinance and a historic district commission. CLG communities may participate in the nomination of properties to the National Register of Historic Places, and are eligible to apply for federal 50% matching grants for survey and planning projects. Eligible projects for grant funding would include identification and evaluation of significant historic and archaeological properties, the nomination of eligible properties to the National Register, historic preservation plans and certain education-related activities.
