It contains vector polygons representing sensitive biological resource data for 161 plant species (habitat) in Long Island Sound. The study area includes Long Island Sound, tidal tributaries, freshwater streams, lakes, and land areas in New York and Connecticut. In this atlas, these species include both upland and emergent wetland plants. Plant species considered Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) are generally included in the BENTHIC layer, not in the HABITAT layer. Vector polygons in this data set represent habitat (plant) species distributions, concentration areas, areas of high ecological value or vulnerable occurrence. Several sources of data were used, and several subject matter experts were consulted to develop the information. Species-specific abundance, seasonality, status, life history, and source information are stored in associated data tables (described in Entity Attribute Overview below) designed to be used in conjunction with this spatial data layer. It contains vector polygons representing biological resource data for six benthic species in Long Island Sound. The study area includes Long Island Sound, tidal tributaries, freshwater streams, lakes, and land areas in New York and Connecticut. In this atlas, these six species are all plants considered Submerged Aquatic Vegetation, or SAV. The six SAV species include Eelgrass (Zostera marina), Hornleaf riverweed (Podostemum ceratophyllum), Small pondweed (Potamogeton pusillus ssp. gemmiparus), Vasey's pondweed (Potamogeton vaseyi), Shortspike watermilfoil (Myriophyllum sibiricum), and Cutleaf watermilfoil (Myriophyllum pinnatum). Vector polygons in this data set represent benthic (SAV) species distributions, colonies, concentration areas, and areas of high ecological value, or vulnerable occurrence. This feature class resides within the SOCECON Feature Data Set of the Long Island Sound 2016 ESI geodatabase. It contains vector polygons representing Natural Hazard human-use resource data for Long Island Sound and adjacent lands and waters. The study area includes Long Island Sound, Peconic Bay, tributary watersheds, tidal tributaries, and freshwater streams and lakes, in New York and Connecticut. The vector polygons represent predicted flood inundation in the event of a Category 1, 2, 3, or 4 storm. For each storm category, the level of flooding is binned into anticipated depth of flood waters: <= 3 feet, > 3 feet, > 6, and > 9 feet. These are modeled data, based on the National Hurricane Center’s Sea, Lake and Overland Surges from Hurricanes (SLOSH) model (https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/surge/slosh.php). Raster model data, prepared in 2015, was converted to vector polygons for the purpose of the ESI. These data should be used for planning purposes only. The ArcGIS feature class (NATURAL HAZARD POLYS) has 2 associated attribute tables, considered as Entities or "Child Items" in this metadata record.
