Offshore Wind Speed and Direction
These data represent the average monthly wind speed and direction at the surface of the ocean. Source data includes values from January 1, 1979, to December 31, 2010, at hourly temporal resolution, with a spatial resolution of 0.313 degrees latitude x 0.312 degrees longitude. Values for wind speed are in meters per second and wind direction in degrees from True North.

Offshore Mean Annual Wind Speed at 90 m

Areas with annual average wind speed of 7 meters per second (m/s) and greater at 90 m height are generally considered to have a wind resource suitable for offshore development. The source data is from 2002 through 2008.

The Cross-Calibrated Multi-Platform (CCMP) Ocean Surface Wind Vector Analyses (Atlas et al., 2011) provide a consistent, gap-free long-term time-series of monthly ocean surface wind vector analysis fields from July 1987 through June 2011 at 0.25 degree resolution. North Atlantic Right Whale Seasonal Management Areas

These data represent Seasonal Management Area locations where regulations implement speed restrictions in shipping areas at certain times of the year along the coast of the U.S. Atlantic seaboard. The purpose of the regulations is to reduce the likelihood of deaths and serious injuries to endangered North Atlantic right whales that result from collisions with ships as designated by 73 FR 60173, October 10, 2008, Rules and Regulations. Sunset clause removed 78 FR 34245, June 16, 2014. The effective date of this rule is December 6, 2013.
