Principal Ports are the top 150 U.S. ports based upon total annual tonnage. Variation in annual tonnage at a port may result in exclusion or inclusion on the Principal Port list. The Principal Port data contain port code, port name, and values for total, domestic, foreign, import and export tonnage.

Current Magnitude and Direction

Monthly and annual U and V vectors were summarized for 14 unique depth levels from daily means using the HYCOM and NCODA Global 1/12-degree Reanalysis. The U vector (m/s) is to the East and the V vector (m/s) is to the North. Current magnitude (m/s) was calculated using the daily U and V vectors. Descriptive statistics of mean, variance, standard deviations, minimum, and maximum were calculated for each month from the twenty years of data using the daily means (1992-2012). Mean, variance, and standard deviation was calculated for the annual summary period (1992-2012). The mean direction in degrees (with 0 = North) was calculated from the summarized U and V vector means, and represents the direction that the current is moving toward. The 1/12-degree global HYCOM+NCODA Ocean Reanalysis was funded by the U.S. Navy and the Modeling and Simulation Coordination Office. Computer time was made available by the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program. The output is publicly available at http://hycom.org.
Vessel Routing Measures

These data show the boundaries for select vessel routing measures in U.S. waters. These measures are part of an international ships routing system established by the IMO. Routing systems are systems of predetermined routes and related measures that are recommended for use by, and may be made mandatory for, all ships, certain categories of ships or ships carrying certain cargoes when adopted and implemented in accordance with the guidelines and criteria developed by the [IMO] and are designed to contribute to the safety of life at sea, safety and efficiency of navigation, and/or protection of the marine environment. SOLAS Chapter V, reg. 10, para. 1. For coastal and ocean planning. Not for navigation.
Navigation Channels

This layer shows coastal channels and waterways that are maintained and surveyed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. These channels are necessary transportation systems that serve economic and national security interests. The possibility of silting is always present. Local authorities should be consulted for the controlling depth. NOAA Charts frequently show controlling depths in a table, which is kept current by the U.S. Coast Guard Local Notice to Mariners.

These data represent operable electric generating plants within the vicinity of the U.S. coastline by energy source. This includes all plants that are operating, on standby, or short or long-term out of service with a combined nameplate capacity of 1 megawatt or more. The presence of a facility may indicate that power transmission infrastructure exists nearby. The absence of a facility or lack of sufficient capacity at a facility in a given area may be an important characteristic in future energy planning activities.

These data provide an accurate high-resolution shoreline compiled from imagery of Port of Astoria, OR-WA . This vector shoreline data is based on an office interpretation of imagery that may be suitable as a geographic information system (GIS) data layer. This metadata describes information for both the line and point shapefiles. The NGS attribution scheme 'Coastal Cartographic Object Attribute Source Table (C-COAST)' was developed to conform the attribution of various sources of shoreline data into one attribution catalog. C-COAST is not a recognized standard, but was influenced by the International Hydrographic Organization's S-57 Object-Attribute standard so the data would be more accurately translated into S-57. Anchorages

Anchorages are well-defined navigable waters where a vessel may safely drop anchor. The size, shape, and conditions for use of these areas can vary widely. Generally, anchorages are not used for an indefinite duration, nor are they routinely used for maintenance, repair, overhaul, bunkering, or sea trials.
