Babies with Low Birth Weight - This indicator shows the percentage of live births that are a low birth weight (2500 grams or less). Babies born with a low birth weight are at increased risk for serious health consequences including disabilities and death. Low birth weight babies weigh less than 2,500 grams (5.5 pounds). Early Prenatal Care - This indicator shows the percentage of pregnant women who receive prenatal care beginning in the first trimester. Inadequate prenatal care services have been linked to higher rates of infant mortality, low birth weight and pre-term deliveries. While Maryland as a whole ranks better than the National average and the Healthy People 2020 Target, disparities still exist. Due to the change in methodology for collecting information on the Maryland birth certificate, data collected in 2010 and after are not comparable to data collected in earlier years. Updated on 8/14/2024 Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Rate - This indicator shows the rate of sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUIDs) per 1,000 live births. Sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUIDs) include deaths from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), unknown cause, accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed. Three hundred and sixty-two babies died from SUIDs in Maryland from 2005-2009. Link to Data Details

Suicide Rate - This indicator shows the suicide rate per 100,000 population. Suicide is a serious public health problem that can have lasting effects on individuals, families, and communities. Mental disorders and/or substance abuse have been found in the great majority of people who have died by suicide.
