Salmon spawning locations (redds) in two restored reaches of the lower Merced River, California

Salmon spawning locations (redds) were mapped to characterize habitat use along two reaches of the lower Merced River in California's Central Valley and thus support research intended to evaluate the extent to which large-scale restoration projects provided improved salmon spawning habitat. A related goal of this study was to improve our understanding of the geomorphic factors influencing spawning site selection by salmon. Salmon redds were mapped during the fall of 2016 at the Merced River Ranch and Robinson Reach field sites using real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS. The location of the center of each redd was surveyed in the UTM Zone 10/NAD83 coordinate system, with easting and northing coordinates recorded in units of meters.

MESHR has been testing an approach focused on habitat metrics and fish response for determining effectiveness of large wood treatments. Data is collected using an adapted protocol from the Washington State Salmon Recovery Funding Board (Crawford 2011) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Kaufmann et al. 1999) to methodically measure habitat characteristics in stream reaches for a subsample of large wood installation projects using a Before-After, Control-Impact (BACI) study design. Large wood, residual water and pool depths, percent occurrence of particular substrates, substrate embeddedness, fish cover, and snorkel validation data are documented. 1.092 MB. The Multnomah Channel Wetland Restoration Monitoring Project characterizes wetlands use by juvenile salmonids and other fishes in the Multnomah Channel Marsh Natural Area (MCMNA) and nearby habitats of the Columbia River estuary. The project is a collaborative program by federal, state, and municipal organizations evaluating the ecological effectiveness of floodplain restoration actions at the MCMNA on behalf of at-risk juvenile salmonids. The project uses a wide range of sampling methods to document fish, invertebrate prey, vegetation, and physical habitat conditions and to experimentally assess salmon performance. Sampling methods include: PIT arrays and remote detection systems to monitor salmon access, residency, and movements to and from the wetland; experimental net pens to compare salmon food and relative growth potential within different vegetation types; beach seines, traps, PIT detectors, electro-shockers, and other gear to monitor fish abundance and salmon stock composition; and benthic cores, insect fallout traps, emergent traps, and neuston nets to determine invertebrate prey composition, abundance, and transport from the wetland site. Fish samples are also collected along the main-stem estuary, Multnomah Channel, and other wetlands to investigate the effects of river flow and water elevation on fish access to the MCMNA. Invertebrate and fish stomach samples are analyzed at the main campus of Oregon State University (Corvallis, OR) and at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Corvallis Research Laboratory. Other activities, vessels, and sampling equipment are staged from the Pt. Adams Research Station in Hammond, OR. This data release includes images and field measurements used to map salmon spawning locations along the American River near Sacramento, California, via remote sensing; the data were collected November 5-7, 2018. The purpose of this study was to develop and test a spectrally based technique for identifying salmon spawning locations, known as redds, from various types of remotely sensed data. Traditionally, redds have been mapped by eye while walking the bank or from a boat, or by an observer in an aircraft or an interpreter visually examining aerial images. The goal of this proof-of-concept investigation was to assess the potential for more efficient, objective, and automated redd mapping from conventional true color (RGB, or red/green/blue) and hyperspectral images. This child page provides redd locations mapped in the field, with their coordinates defined by surveying the redd centers with real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS receivers. The field-mapped redds were used to train and validate various image-based approaches to mapping salmon spawning locations.

In nearshore marine areas, critical habitat includes areas contiguous with the shoreline from the line of extreme high water out to a depth no greater than 30 meters relative to mean lower low water.See the final rule (70 FR 52630) for descriptions of areas excluded from this critical habitat designation. Excluded Dept of Defense (DOD) lands and Indian lands were not clipped out of the data.
