The SSWP Fish Entrainment Risk Assessment Study is one of many relicensing documents for the South SWP (SSWP) Hydropower Project Number 2426. The California Department of Water Resources and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power applied to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for a new license of the SSWP Project located in Los Angeles County, California along the West Branch of the State Water Project (SWP). The SWP provides southern California with many benefits, including an affordable water supply, reliable regional clean energy, opportunities to integrate green energy, accessible public recreation opportunities, and environmental benefits.

Two fish protective facilities reduce fish losses associated with water export by the federal Central Valley Project (CVP) and California’s State Water Project (SWP). The CVP’s Tracy Fish Collection Facility (TFCF) and the SWP’s Skinner Delta Fish Protective Facility (SDFPF) salvage fish (fish are removed from exported water and released back to the Delta) from water exported from the southern end of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta located in Byron, California. Both facilities use louver-bypass systems to divert fish from the exported water. The salvaged fish are periodically loaded into tanker trucks and transported to fixed release sites in the western Delta. Export and salvage operations began in 1957 at the TFCF and in 1968 at the SDFPF. CDFW conducts risk assessments and implements management actions for the commercial and recreational Dungeness crab fisheries at the fishing zone level. Latitudinal boundaries for each fishing zone are as follows. All fishing zones extend to 200 nautical miles offshore.
