This dataset contains the coastline of Macquarie Island and adjacent islands in WGS84 lat/long coordinates. The coastline was constructed from a variety of sources including SPOT satellite imagery, the Royal Australian Navy's AUS604 hydrographic chart, and photogrammetry using aerial photographs.

This is a polygon GIS dataset representing penguin colonies on Macquarie Island. The penguin species include Gentoo, King, Rockhopper and Royal.

A GPS survey of seabirds on Heard Island during the Australian Antarctic Program's 2000/01 expedition. This layer is stored as two datasets (polygon and point) in the Geographical Information System (GIS). Polygon data represent flying bird and penguin colony extents. Point data represent nest locations and the location of the observation point for flying birds and penguins.

Aerial photography (35mm film) of penguin colonies was acquired over some islands north east of Brattstrand Bluff islands (Eric Woehler). The penguin colonies were traced, then digitised (John Cox), and saved as DXF-files. Using the ArcView extension 'Register and Transform' (Tom Velthuis), The DXF-files were brought into a GIS and transformed to the appropriate islands. Update May 2015 - This dataset has been rename from "Brattstrand Bluff penguin GIS dataset" to "Islands NE of Brattstrand Bluff penguin GIS dataset" to better describe the location of the colonies. The penguin colonies are on a small group of islands approximately 12km north east of Brattstrand Bluff. Latitude 69.148 south and longitude 77.268 east. The Data Centre does not have a copy of the original photographs or described GIS data. In May 2015, the Data Centre has attached the following to this record: The DXF file produced by John Cox by digitising the aerial photography. Note this document is not georeferenced. Four photographs taken in 2009 by Barbara Wienecke, Seabird Ecologist, showing penguin colonies on these islands. A shapefile exists of the digitised colonies. The digitising by Ursula Harris, Australian Antarctic Data Centre, was done by georeferencing the DXF drawing over unprocessed Quickbird Image 05NOV15042413-M1BS-052187281010_01_P002. It was done in two parts, the largest island and then the two smaller islands. This allowed for better matching. The accuracy of this data is unknown.

Seal colonies on Macquarie Island. This is a polygon dataset stored in the Geographical Information System (GIS). Attributes include the species name and whether breeding occurs within the area represented. The species include Southern Elephant and Fur.

Indicative point data representing penguins, flying birds and seals on Macquarie Island. The locations were confirmed by Andrea Turbett, Macquarie Island Executive Officer, in March 2024, based on island-wide censuses conducted annually on Macquarie Island by Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service. Attribute data provided by Sam Thalmann, Wildlife Biologist, Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania. The data includes which annual census the indicative point locations are referencing. Gentoo penguins: Care needs to be exercised in the interpretation of gentoo penguin colony locations as point data is indicative only, and gentoo penguins move colony locations annually. Due to the dynamic nature of the gentoo penguin colony establishment and breeding behaviour on the island, advice should be sought from the Macquarie Island Ranger in Charge on station if greater data resolution is required. Wandering albatross: The census data collates breeding activity including breeding effort and breeding success for individual wandering albatross nests. The species breeds once every two years, with breeding activity focused on the southwest and west coast. Representative point data indicate recent breeding activity, and/or recent aggregations of non-breeding birds displaying courtship behaviour indicative of pre-breeding activity. Fur seals: Locations may consist of breeding fur seals or an area that is regularly and consistently occupied by seals hauled out and resting. Both behaviour types require the area to be avoided. Due to the dynamic nature of the seal distribution and breeding activity on the island, advice should be sought from the Macquarie Island Ranger in Charge on station if greater data resolution is required. King penguin chicks: The locations are based on the king penguin chick counts conducted annually. Every colony on Macquarie Island is located during August (nominally 15th) and reference images are taken to allow subsequent chick counts. Point data is indicative of the colony location.

The approximate extent of seabird colonies on Scullin Monolith, Mac.Robertson Land, Antarctica in 1986/87. The species include Adelie Penguin, Antarctic Petrel, Cape Petrel, Southern Fulmar and South Polar Skua.

This dataset contains the results from surveys of Wandering Albatrosses (Diomedea exulans) on Macquarie Island. The majority of the surveys were conducted at the Caroline Cove colony which contains 59% of the Wandering Albatrosses found on Macquarie Island. Observations were made for 41 consecutive days between 5 December 1975 and 14 January 1976, and for 103 consecutive days between 25 November 1976 and 7 March 1977. Occasional observations were made of birds at other locations on Macquarie Island. Each bird in the colony was banded for identification, sexed and had its plumage scored. The times of arrival and departure, numbers present, interaction and behaviour were observed, and weather conditions were noted irregularly throughout the day. The results are listed in the documentation.
