NPWS Fire History - Wildfires and Prescribed Burns
FireHistory is a feature class that holds final fire boundaries for every year for which there is data. Within the feature class are two subtypes Wildfire (FireType 1) and Prescribed Burn (FireType 2). The polygons are mutually exclusive within each year and they often extend outside NPWS Estate. Fire history is captured by all regions within NPWS. At times data captured by the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Forestry Corporation NSW are imported into this GDB also. The data are now stored centrally in ArcSDE. Enhance Bushfire Management Program (EBMP) Technical Officers collate, update and amend branch data using versions from ArcSDE.

The fire history dataset is a historical record of mapped bushfires that have occurred throughout Tasmania. It forms a critical input into the evaluation of bushfire risk and potential throughout the state. Analysis of past fires assists authorities during prevention, mitigation and suppression of bushfires. The fire history dataset is comprised of two feature classes: 'Fire History' and 'Fire History - Last Impacted'. The fire history records from individual agencies are appended each year into the 'Fire History' feature class. 'Fire History' is a cumulative history layer with overlapping areas where multiple fires have impacted a single region. The 'Fire History - Last Impacted' feature class is derived from 'Fire History' and identifies the latest fire having occurred at any location across the state. The 'Fire History - Last Impacted' feature class does not contain any overlaps.

The dataset provides most recent fire scar mapping for many major fires that have burnt in a given area within or adjacent to National Parks and Wildlife South Australia (NPWSA) reserves. This data set is derived from Fire History mapping. The most recent fire mapping can be used for operational management and planning of fire events and ecological resource management.

Summary This feature class documents the fire history on CMR from 1964 - present. This is 1 of 2 feature classes, a polygon and a point. This data has a variety of different origins which leads to differing quality of data. Within the polygon feature class, this contains perimeters that were mapped using a GPS, hand digitized, on-screen digitized, and buffered circles to the estimated acreage. These 2 files should be kept together. Within the point feature class, fires with only a location of latitude/longitude, UTM coordinate, TRS and no estimated acreage were mapped using a point location. GPS started being used in 1992 when the technology became available. Records from FMIS (Fire Management Information System) were reviewed and compared to refuge records. Polygon data in FMIS only occurs from 2012 to current and many acreage estimates did not match. This dataset includes ALL fires no matter the size. The spreadsheet contains 10-15 records without spatial information and weren't included in either feature class. Fire information from 1964 - 1980 came from records Larry Eichhorn, BLM, provided to CMR staff. Mike Granger, CMR Fire Management Officer, tracked fires on an 11x17 legal pad and all this information was brought into Excel and ArcGIS. Frequently, other information about the fires were missing which made it difficult to back track and fill in missing data. Time was spent verifiying locations that were occasionally recorded incorrectly (DMS vs DD) and converting TRS into Lat/Long and/or UTM. CMR is divided into 2 different UTM zones, zone 12 and zone 13. This occasionally caused errors in projecting. Naming conventions caused confusion. Fires are frequently names by location and there are several "Soda Creek", "Rock Creek", etc fires. Fire numbers were occasionally missing or incorrect. Fires on BLM were included if they were "Assists". Also, fires on satellite refuges and the district were also included. Acreages from GIS were compared to FMIS acres. Please see documentation in ServCat (URL) to see how these were handled.

Historical Bushfire Boundaries - Version 2.0

The Bushfire Boundaries - Historical Dataset (version 2) represents the aggregation of jurisdictional supplied burnt areas polygons that date from the early 1900's through to 2023 (excluding the Northern Territory). The burnt areas represent curated jurisdictional owned polygons of both bushfires and prescribed (planned) burns. This dataset was produced under Work Stream 1C - Activity 3 of the National Bushfire Intelligence Capability; a collaborative partnership between the Australian Climate Services, CSIRO (NBIC), Geoscience Australia (GA), and the Emergency Management Spatial Information Network (EMSINA). Under agreement this Project (Activity 3) will release a nationally consistent, harmonised and standardised historical bushfire boundary dataset derived from the authoritative state and territory agencies in both 2023 (this dataset) and again in November 2024. The information released within this dataset is reflective of the data supplied by participating authoritative agencies. It may, or may not, represent all fire history within that jurisdiction.
