Transport for NSW - Journey to Work
Journey to Work (JTW) data are derived from the 5-yearly Census of Population and Housing conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). It includes data on employment by industry and occupation, and method of travel to work at a fine geographical level known as the travel zone. This information is a valuable resource for the analysis and forecasting of employment, commuting patterns and land use changes.

This dataset contains a snapshot of commuting patterns for Census day 2001 (Tuesday 7th August). It is a complete enumeration via a self-completion Census form. The scope of JTW is employed persons aged 15 years and over, who were employed during the week before Census night, and with a workplace in NSW. JTW data may produce slightly different counts to those obtained directly from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for the same geographic level due to: ABS confidentialising process is applied to the data that TPA purchases (randomisation of small cells) Further validation and adjustment of the data undertaken by TPA Imputation of records of incomplete addresses to eliminate locality ‘dump’ codes ABS data is used with permission from the Australian Bureau of Statistics

Thank you for your interest in Journey to Work data. Due to changes implemented by the ABS to confidentialise Census 2016 data and protect individuals from re-identification, TPA is not able to release JTW 2016 with TZ spatial variables. If you have downloaded JTW 2016 data with TZ spatial variables from this site, please delete it. TPA does not recommend it’s use. If you require further assistance or clarification, please email OpenDataHelp@transport.nsw.gov.au. JTW 2016 is available to download via the ABS website: Journey to Work (JTW) 2016. Please note, in releasing JTW 2016 the ABS has removed additivity and supressed all values smaller than 3.

Transport Performance and Analytics (TPA) provides projections of workforce at the small area (Travel Zone or TZ) level for the Sydney Greater Metropolitan Area (GMA). The GMA includes the Sydney Greater Capital City Statistical Area (GCCSA), the Southern Highlands and Shoalhaven SA4, Illawarra SA4, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie SA4, and Lower Hunter, Port Stephens, and Maitland SA3s, as defined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). TPA workforce projections are five-yearly, from 2011 to 2056 and relate to usual residents of the GMA aged 15 years and over who are employed. They are estimates of employed people based on where they reside. TPA also produces employment projections based on the workplace or job location. They refer to persons aged 15 years and over, working in the GMA regardless of their place of usual residence. The majority of the persons employed in the GMA also reside in the GMA. Factors considered in the estimation of workforce projections include: population by age and gender; participation rates; unemployment rates; historical labour force data; past trends of employment in each industry and the forecasts of industry growth or decline in each region.

Travel Zones (TZs) are the spatial unit of geography defined by Transport Performance and Analytics (TPA), a business unit within Transport for NSW (TfNSW). The TZ spatial layer is applied to data sources used by TfNSW for transport modelling and analysis, including the Household Travel Survey and the Census 2016 Journey to Work data. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Statistical Area boundaries form the foundation of the TZ. Generally, a TZ is larger than a Statistical Area Level 1 or Mesh Block, both ABS geography definitions. The ABS Statistical Areas are based on population counts whereas TZ boundaries are defined using population, employment, housing and transport infrastructure. TZs are designed to have standardised trip generation levels across all zones. This causes zones to be different sizes across the metropolitan area. As with many other spatial boundaries, TZs tend to be small in areas with high land-use densities and larger in areas of lower density.

Transport for NSW - Household Travel Survey

The Household Travel Survey (HTS) collects information on personal travel behaviour. The study area is the Sydney Greater Metropolitan Area (GMA) and forms the geographic scope of the survey. The area covered by the GMA includes Sydney, Illawarra and the Hunter. All residents of occupied private dwellings within this area are considered in scope of the survey and are randomly selected to participate. The HTS is conducted every day of the year and has been running continuously since 1997/98. Each year approx. 5,000 households are selected to participate. Data is collected on all trips made over a 24-hour period. Surveys are conducted using face-to-face interviews and each member of the household is included. HTS data is available by Region, Statistical Area Level 3 (SA3) or Local Government Area (LGA). LGA Data is only available from 2016/17 onwards.
