The planned burn program will be undertaken dependent on weather, and therefore it is difficult to forecast the actual date of burns. Properties adjoining the planned burn locations will be letterbox dropped prior to the burn. Additional burns to those listed may be undertaken during the year dependent on the weather and site conditions, and notifications will be issued. These additional burns will be reflected in this map.

Prescribed Burning PCS conducts a number of prescribed burns each year in and around urban and rural areas across Canberra and Googong Foreshore (NSW) to prepare for the upcoming fire season. For more information view the About prescribed burns page, or view the Schedule of Prescribed Burns. The SBMP requires regional fire management plans (RFMPs) to provide a link between the strategy of this plan and the more detailed bushfire operational plans (BOPs). RFMPs will be updated to cover the entire ACT to reflect boundaries based on bushfire risk and geography. RFMPs detail the five-year program (2014–19) of work for fuel reduction, access and infrastructure in the ACT. RFMPs for 2019–24 will be prepared during the life of the SBMP. The ACT Emergency Services Commissioner (the Commissioner) is responsible for approval of RFMPs. They will be reviewed as required to reflect significant changes. These may include unplanned bushfires, which may provide strategic advantages or changes to the location or extent of assets – for example, the development of new estates. This dataset is available on Brisbane City Council’s open data website – data.brisbane.qld.gov.au. The site provides additional features for viewing and interacting with the data and for downloading the data in various formats. Approximate geographic extent of proposed planned burns in the Brisbane City Council area that have permits granted. Planned burning on Brisbane City Council land is used to maintain the health of forests and lessen the impact of wild fires. Council aims to reduce the amount of fire fuel, such as dead wood, by 75% over the 60 to 80% of the land being burned. Some areas of the forest are left untouched, which can be used by wildlife as a refuge and help re-establish vegetation in the burnt sections. This dataset displays the position and extents of areas that have been identified as prescribed burn areas in the RFMP 2019-28. These prescribed burns may be developed and undertaken anywhere within the PCS and TCCS estate within the ACT and are subject to consideration and approval by a range of stakeholders as appropriate, and separate to the RFMP process; they are informed by ecological monitoring and research. This allows for flexibility in planning and developing these particular treatments as circumstances dictate in the context of an adaptive management approach. Additionally these burn locations are displayed as ‘maximum burn areas’.

This dataset contains results from a study examining the potential impacts of projected climatic change on prescribed burning in the southeastern United States. A set of burn window criteria (suitable weather conditions within which burning may occur based on maximum daily temperature, daily average relative humidity, and daily average wind speed), were applied to projections from an ensemble of Global Climate Models (GCM) under two greenhouse gas emission scenarios, as well as past observations for comparison. Data are provided as decadal output for observed conditions, and for individual GCM results for the historical climate scenario and the two future climate scenarios are provided. In addition, summary statistics (e.g., multi-model mean, and for selected quantiles) are provided for the GCM ensemble as a whole by decade.

Evaluations of FSim burn probability maps for pyromes of the conterminous United States based on observed wildfire perimeters

The FSim wildfire simulation model is widely used to generate estimates of burn probability (BP). However, few studies have compared BP models to subsequent wildfires to assess their suitability for estimating near-future wildfire risk. Here, we compared the U.S.D.A. Forest Service’s publicly available BP map for the conterminous U.S. (Short et al., 2020; Dillon et al., 2023) to observed wildfire perimeters. Our main focus was to evaluate the BP map version based on 2014 LANDFIRE fuels data and calibrated to historical wildfires from 1992-2015, allowing us to compare BP to observed wildfires from 2016-2022. We also compared evaluations using a newer version of the BP map based on 2020 LANDFIRE fuels and 1992-2020 historical wildfires, and additionally performed evaluations for the western U.S. based on differing wildfire size classes. This dataset includes CSV tables summarizing burned area proportions by BP classes for individual pyromes, or regions with similar wildfire regimes, as well as processing code used to summarize burned area by BP classes.
