The water temperature and depth data in this accession was collected by Hydro Department of Birkenhead, Merseyside, UK. Three different ships were used to collect the 371 bathythermograph (XBT) observations spanning from May 19, 1983 to May 31, 1988. The data was submitted by Mr. P.F. Wainwright. The data has been processed by NODC and is available in C116 Bathythermograph (XBT) file format.

The water depth and temperature data were collected from ships CHARLES DARWIN, CLYDE-OWS LIMA, DISCOVERY, and OCEAN WEATHER STATION L between August 24 1987 and November 2, 1992. The originator's bathythermograph (XBT) data containing three files with 1,697 observations were submitted on a diskette by Mr. M. Sawyer, Hydro Department, UK to NODC.

The water depth and temperature data was collected from five ships by the Australian and New Zealand Navy. The data was collected between August 1, 1993 and March 29, 1995. The originator's 267 analog bathythermograph (XBT) traces were submitted by Mr. Andrew L. Walsh to NODC.

The water depth and temperature data was collected using over 45 different ships from August 1947 to October 1983. The originator's bathythermograph (XBT) data was submitted in a tape containing 7,537 observations by Ted Dalzell of Hydro Department, Birkenhead, Merseyside, United Kingdom. The data has been converted and is now available on line in C116-Bathythermograph-XBT and C128-Bathythermograph-MBT file formats of NODC.

The water depth and temperature data was collected from multiple ships by the Australian Navy. The data was collected from 1978-1991. The originator's analog bathythermograph (XBT) data was submitted in a box along with eight cassette tapes by Mr. Ben J. Searle. The data has been converted and is now available on line in C116 file format of NODC.

The accession contains Bathythermograph XBT and MBT data in C116 and C128 format. The data spans a period from August 1943 to April 1990. The data is a compilation of unprocessed XBT data submitted by UK in accession numbers 7601931, 7800266 and 8700346.

Data has been processed by NODC to the NODC standard Bathythermograph (XBT) (C116) format. The C116/C118 format contains temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data record was comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. Unlike the MBT Data File, in which temperature values were recorded at uniform 5 m intervals, the XBT data files contained temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths were recorded at the minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to accurately define the temperature curve. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of either 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m. Prior to July 1994, XBT data were routinely processed to one of these standard types. XBT data are now processed and loaded directly in to the NODC Ocean Profile Data Base (OPDB). Historic data from these two data types were loaded into the OPDB.

The water depth and temperature data were collected as part of South Atlantic Ventilation Experiment (SAVE) from over a dozen ships between January 3, 1964 and December 5, 1969. The originator's bathythermograph (UBT 48) data containing standard Level MBT observations and surface salinity were submitted on a diskette by France.

The water depth and temperature data was collected as part of Global Temperature- Salinity Pilot Project (GTSPP) from ship TORRENS by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization and Australian Oceanographic Data Center, Potts point, New South Wales, Australia. The data was collected from June 19, 1991 to October 3, 1991. The originator's bathythermograph (XBT) data file was submitted by Mr. Andrew L. Walsh in GTSPP format via FTP.

The water depth and temperature data were collected in north and south Atlantic as part of World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) from four different ships between August 14, 1986 and December 4, 1986. The originator's bathythermograph (XBT) data tape containing profiles were submitted by Dr. Reiner Onken, University of Kiel, Germany. The data have been converted and are now available on line in C125 Bathythermograph-XBT-Selected Depths file format of NODC.
