Hourly location, current velocity, and temperature collected from Global Drifter Program drifters world-wide
This dataset includes sea surface temperature and current data collected by satellite-tracked surface drifting buoys ("drifters") for the NOAA Global Drifter Program. The Drifter Data Assembly Center (DAC) at Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) has applied quality control procedures to edit these data (position and temperature) and interpolated them to 1-hour intervals using an optimum interpolation procedure. The data include positions (latitude and longitude), sea surface temperatures, and velocities (eastward, northward) with accompanying error estimates. Metadata include identification numbers, experiment number, start location and time, end location and time, drogue loss date, death code, manufacturer, and drifter type.

This data collection includes data from multiple SVP drifters deployed in the region of American Samoa to assess ocean currents and sea surface temperature. Drifter data files contain drifter ids, year, month, day, hour, minute, second, GPS latitude and longitude. Drifter data was collected hourly. All dates and times are UTC. Contact Coral Reef Ecosystem Division (CRED), NOAA Pacific Island Fisheries Science Center for more information. These data were collected for coral reef ecosystem research. They are collected concurrently with ecological/biological reef assessments and monitoring data.

Surface currents and temperature data from satellite-tracked drifters in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas from 2011-08-07 to 2014-03-06 (NCEI Accession 0126984)

Drifters were deployed from vessels in the Chukchi Sea during the ice-free seasons of 2011-2013. Drifter positions were determined via GPS, and positions were relayed via Iridium communications to on-shore data centers. Drifters were tracked from their release until they a) were picked up at sea for redeployment; b) beached on-shore; or c) died at sea because of battery failure or other causes. Many drifters remained active as sea ice re-formed in the region, and 3 drifters were frozen in the ice and released the following spring. Drifters also recorded Sea Surface Temperature (SST) from 2012 onward. Drifters were of various types (Davis, SVP, and Microstar) and were drogued at various depths (1 m and 10 m).

The drifting buoy data in this accession was collected from 120 stations over 15 year period by US Coast Guard, Groton, CT. The data was collected between April 5, 1976 and October 16, 1991.
