The 2019 sample design is thoroughly documented in the 2019 NSDUH sample design report (Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality, 2020).

Chapter 2 revisits the 2021 sample design. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 document the sample experiences at the third, fourth, and fifth stages of sample selection, respectively.
