This data set contains pounds and value for all seafood products that are landed and sold by established seafood dealers and brokers in the SE Region of the US mainland. Data is collected electronically and transmitted to the NMFS and its state partners from each purchase the seafood dealer makes from a federally permitted fishing vessel.

Landings from the NEFSC CFDBS was aggregated into the Georges Bank and Gulf of Maine regions for commercially and ecologically important taxa. The goal was to use this data in a surplus production modeling workshop to explore the effects of fishing and climate on individual species, functional groups, and the whole ecosystem.

The purpose of the Fisheries One-Stop-Shop (FOSS) is to make fisheries dependent information readily available to fisheries managers, scientists and the American public at a national as well as regional level. Collection and management of fisheries dependent data are distributed throughout NOAA Fisheries, State Fisheries, management agencies and regional Fisheries Information Networks (FINs). The distributed nature of NOAA Fisheries information systems, differences in collection authorities and confidentiality requirements increases the importance of this flexible technical architecture that can meet the changing needs for information at national, regional and local levels of resolution. At the same time, the technical architecture is scalable to meet enterprise wide requirements for management of other types of fisheries data and fisheries independent data. Currently available via FOSS are the summarized, non-confidential, annual Commercial Landings by state as provided through the Atlantic Coastal Cooperative Statistics Program (ACCSP), the Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Information Network (GulfFIN). Recreational Landings estimates are available and provided via NMFS Headquarters. In FY2011, FOSS will be expanded to include all commercial landings nationally.

2010-2017 Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data were used from the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement to create this fishing effort dataset for the U.S. West Coast. The dataset was generated using VMS points at fishing speeds to create fishing tracks. This data set, in the table ALS.ALS_LANDINGS7278 contains annual and monthly quantities and values for all seafood products that are landed within the Southeast Region and sold by established seafood dealers and brokers. It complements the table ALS.ALS_LANDINGS. These types of fishery-dependent data, referred to as the general canvass landings statistics, have been collected by the NOAA Fisheries Service, National Marine Fisheries Service and its predecessor agency, the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries and more recently by our State partner agencies under the Cooperative Statistics Program. These data are available on computer since the early 1960's. The quantities and values that are reported in this data set include the annual and monthly landings that were initiated in 1972. Between 1962 and 1971, the data for were collected annually and not monthly. See the sections on Links for the reference to the annual general canvass landings. The general canvass landings from 1972-1976 include quantities and values for all marine commercial landings and are identified by species (usually the local or common name). These data are collected from or reported by every seafood dealer or broker that is licensed by each state in the Southeast Region (North Carolina through Texas). Information on the gear and area of capture is available for most of the landings statistics in the data set (please see Issues for exceptions); however, they are summary records and do not contain information on the quantities of fishing effort or identify the fishermen or vessels that caught the fish or shellfish. This table contains data from FL-TX for the years 1972-1976. The ALS.ALS_LANDINGS table contains data for GA-NC for the same period as well as all the more recent monthly data. In the early years, the data in this data set were collected by field agents employed by the Southeast Fisheries Science Center and assigned to local fishing ports. The field agents canvassed the seafood dealers and recorded the quantity and value for each species or species category from the dealer?s receipts. Based on interviews with dealers and fishermen as well as their own detailed knowledge of the fishing activity in the area, the agents would determine the type of fishing gear and area where the fishing occurred. In addition, summarized data are extracted from the NOAA-SEFSC Gulf Shrimp System for commercial landings of shrimp species that are landed at ports in the coastal area of the Gulf of Mexico.

The Fisheries Statistics Division of the NOAA Fisheries has automated data summary programs that anyone can use to rapidly and easily summarize U.S. commercial fisheries landings. These programs allow you to query our commercial fishery data bases and summarize United States domestic commercial landings in several formats. Domestic fishery landings are those fish and shellfish that are landed and sold in the 50 states by U.S. fishermen and do not include landings made in U.S. territories or by foreign fishermen. You can summarize the pounds and dollar value of commercial landings by your choice of years, months, states and species for the years 1990 onwards. The volume and value of 1950 onwards landings can be summarized by: years, states and species; by years, states, species and fishing gears; or years, states, species, finfish or shellfish groups, and price per pound.

These types of data, referred to as the general canvass landings statistics, have been collected by the NOAA Fisheries Service, National Marine Fisheries Service and its predecessor agency, the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries. These data are available on computer since the mid 1920s. The quantities and values that are reported in this data set include monthly landings that were initiated in 1972. Between 1926 and 1971, data were collected annually and not monthly. Mixed annual and monthly data occur from 1972-1976 according to State and year. The general canvass landings include quantities and value for all commercially caught marine species and are identified by species or species group. These data are collected from or reported by every seafood dealer or broker that is licensed by each state in the Southeast Region (North Carolina through Texas). In addition, information on the gear and area of capture is available for most of the landings statistics in the data set except for Florida 1977-1996 and Louisiana 1992-1999. However, because these data are summaries, they do not contain information on the quantities of fishing effort or identifications of the fishermen or vessels that caught the fish or shellfish. In early years, these data were collected by field agents employed by the Southeast Fisheries Science Center and assigned to local fishing ports. These individuals would canvass the seafood dealers and record the quantity and value for each species or species category from the sales receipts maintained by the seafood dealers. Based on their detailed knowledge of the fishing activity in the area, the agents would estimate the type of fishing gear and area where the fishing was likely to have occurred. It should be noted that landings by gear and water body (fishing area) does not reside in the monthly landings data set for Florida for the years, 1977-1995, Louisiana 1990-1999, and Texas (for gear) from 1993 to present (this is subject to change for years 2008 and more recent). Annual landings by gear, water body and distance from shore are available in the Annual General Canvass data for Florida. More detailed information on the caveats associated with these data is provided in the Issues section. In more recent years, the states in the Southeast Region began to implement trip ticket programs that required the licensed seafood dealer/brokers to report the landings of all seafood products. A trip ticket program was initiated in Florida in 1985, in North Carolina in 1994, in Louisiana in 1999, in Alabama in 2000, and in Texas in 2007. In addition to the quantities of these landings, the states require dealers to report the price, the type of gear and the fishing area for each trip. Through cooperative agreements with each of the states, monthly summaries of the states trip ticket programs are provided to the Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) and are included in the general canvass landings data set. In addition, summarized data are extracted from the NOAA-SEFSC Gulf Shrimp System for commercial landings of shrimp species that are landed at port in the coastal area of the Gulf of Mexico.

This project was initiated in response to regulation 50 CFR 660.114, which mandates that economic data be collected from every participant in the trawl rationalization program. The data are collected annually from catcher vessels, catcher processors, motherships, first receivers, and shorebased processors through paper-based forms. The four forms (specific to entity type) are mailed annually in May, and collect data about the fishing, buying, and processing information from the previous year. The entity must submit their data by September 1 in order to renew their limited entry trawl permits, reissue their quota share, vessel accounts, and receive their first receiver site licenses. The data, reports, tech memos, and academic papers are used by Northwest Region staff, Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC), and headquarters staff to inform management decisions, and to monitor the effects of the program.
