Oceanographic data and ROV dive-related multimedia and information collected during the EX1603 Hohonu Moana: Exploring the Deep Waters off Hawai`i expedition on NOAA Ship OKEANOS EXPLORER in the North Pacific Ocean from 2016-02-23 to 2016-03-16 (NCEI Accession 0150527)
This dataset contains oceanographic data collected in the waters just outside of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM) in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, along the transit from Midway to Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. Operations for this cruise included ROV, mapping, telepresence-based remote participation, and CTD rosette operations. The ship's deep water mapping systems were used, as well as NOAA's two-body 6000 m remotely operated vehicle, CTD rosette, and high-bandwidth satellite connection for real-time ship to shore communications. Daytime ROV dives included high-resolution visual surveys and limited rock and biologic specimen sampling. Exploration operations focused on deep-water areas around the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, and will help establish a baseline of information in the region to catalyze further exploration, research, and management activities.

This dataset contains oceanographic data collected in the deep waters in and around Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM) in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. The primary goal for this cruise was to collect baseline data and information to support priority NOAA science and management needs. The expedition is part of a three-year Campaign of Expeditions (Campaign to Address Pacific monument Science, Technology, and Ocean NEeds or CAPSTONE) focused on exploring deepwater marine protected areas in the Pacific. Operations for this cruise included the 24-hour collection of ship navigation data and scientific computing system data, which comprises of meteorological and oceanographic sensor data, as well as water column profile data. The ship also conducted daytime ROV dives that focused in depths between 250 and 6,000 meters, and included high-resolution visual surveys and biological/geological sample collections. Opportunistic CTD rosette operations were completed to collect more information about the environmental parameters at ROV dive sites where collecting the data is considered important to understanding the physical or chemical properties of the overlying water column.

This dataset contains oceanographic data collected in the deep water areas around Wake Island and along transits from Guam to Kwajalein. Operations will use the ship’s deep water mapping systems, NOAA’s two-body 6000 m remotely operated vehicles, CTD rosette, and the ship’s high-bandwidth satellite connection for real-time ship to shore communications. Daytime ROV dives were planned most days, as were a few dedicated mapping transit days. ROV dives included high-resolution visual surveys and limited rock and biologic specimen sampling. Mapping operations were conducted overnight when the ROV was on deck and CTD casts were taken to collect more environmental information at sites of interest. This expedition helped establish a baseline of information in the region to catalyze further exploration, research, and management activities.
