Some marine mammals travel thousands of kilometres to find their food, continuously diving to great depths. By instrumenting them, it is possible to directly observe their foraging behaviour. Simultaneously, we collect unique oceanographic data in the remote Polar regions. The MEOP consortium (MEOP stands for "Marine Mammals Exploring the Oceans Pole to Pole") brings together several national programmes to produce a comprehensive quality-controlled database of oceanographic data obtained in Polar Regions from instrumented marine mammals.

This dataset is a copy of MEOP-SMS Database (submesoscale sampling of the ocean). It contains Water temperature, salinity, pressure taken by CTD attached to marine mammals for the Marine Mammals Exploring the Oceans Pole to Pole (MEOP) project in the Indian, S. Atlantic, and S. Pacific Oceans. The MEOP-SMS database is a collection of CTD data gathered with CTD-SRDLs attached to elephant seals. The CTD-SRDLs were set in continuous recording mode, and could be retrieved, enabling retrieval of the entire CTD archive at the sampling frequency (0.5 Hz) for periods of several months. Instruments were deployed at the Kerguelen Islands and at Peninsula Valdes (Argentina) as part of the SO-MEMO program led by Christophe Guinet (CEBC/CNRS, France). Data are provided in the form of profiles (format ncARGO). A description of the dataset and the post-processing can be found in Siegelman et al., 2019 (see the Documentation).

This dataset contains temperature and light CTD data from the Marine Mammals Exploring the Ocean Pole to Pole (MEOP) program taken TDR (time-depth recorder) deployed on elephant seals in Kerguelen Island area from 2008-10-17 to 2016-01-17. The Oceanographic data collected by Antarctic seals (Southern Elephant and Weddell seals mainly) are collected as part of the SO-MEMO (Observing System - Mammals as samplers of the Ocean Environment, PI. C. Guinet, CEBC-CNRS-ULR). Data were collected in combination with geo-positioning measurements. The loggers, either TDR-MK9 or TDR10, are manufactured by Wildlife Computers and are able to measure continuously pressure, temperature and light along the seal foraging trip. The resolution and precision of temperature data is rather low, of order 0.5C, however the spatial resolution is unusually high with more than 60 profiles every day. Data are in NetCDF.

This dataset contains data from 84 high resolution CTD stations, collected 26 Dec 1999 to 8 Feb 2000 by R/V Nathaniel B Palmer. These data support the Antarctic Pack Ice Seals (APIS) project, funded by the US National Science Foundation grant #OPP9816086. Data were acquired using a SeaBird 911plus CTD and processed by the data originator with SeaBird data processing software. The Ocean Serial data in this accession was collected from "Station 27" between 1946-1994. Oceanographic Station Data contain physical and chemical oceanographic data recorded at discrete depth levels. The Oceanographic Station Data observations were made using multi-bottle Nansen casts or other types of water samplers. The data containing 12,647 records was submitted to NODC by Charles Fitzpatrick at NW Atlantic Fisheries Center, St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada. The data was collected between June 23, 1946 and June 23, 1994 using multiple ships from multiple countries.

Temperature and salinity data were collected by SeaCAT sensors from seven deployments within 2004-2007 on the HALE-ALOHA mooring, a location about 100 km north of Oahu, Hawaii, USA. The HALE-ALOHA mooring supports the Hawaii Ocean Time-series program. The SeaCAT sensors were one of many instruments deployed for the Multi-disciplinary Ocean Sensors for Environmental Analyses and Networks (MOSEAN) project, lead by the Ocean Physics Laboratory (OPL) of the University of California at Santa Barbara. The MOSEAN project is funded by the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP). The main goal of MOSEAN is to develop and test relatively small, lightweight optical and chemical sensors for autonomous deployment. Each deployment lasted around six months. The Seabird Electronics SeaCAT 16 provided 5-minute sampling and were mounted at various depths ranging from 10 to 200 m. Each deployment had one or two depths and depth levels varied among deployments. There were no available data for deployment 4. The data were quality controlled by the OPL.

Four time-series data sets are from instruments on biophysical moorings at the established NOAA/PMEL data-collection site "M5" on the eastern Bering Sea Shelf. Mooring were deployed at the M5 site in the Fall of each year; in September in 2015, 2016 and 2017, and October in 2018. Contract Fishing Vessel Aquila was used for deployments in 2015, 2016 and 2018 (cruises AQ1501, AQ1601 and AQ1801, respectively). NOAA Ship Oscar Dyson was used for deployments in 2017 (cruise DY1708). Moorings and instruments were left over winter and recovered the following Fall. Biophysical subsurface mooring filenames, e.g. 15bs-5a, indicate year (15) area (bs) and defined location ("5" for M5). Instrumentation included SeaBird SBE-37 (Microcat), SBE-39, SBE 56 (temperature sensor) profilers and WetLabs EcoFluorometers. Data include temperature, conductivity, salinity, pressure, water depth, raw chlorophyll fluorescence and chlorophyll a. The cruise was funded by NOAA, Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory EcoFOCI program and NOAA Arctic Research Program with additional support from AOOS, the NOAA-regional ocean data partnership. The Ecosystem and Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (EcoFOCI) program is a partnership with NOAA PMEL and NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science center (AFSC). Scientists from PMEL and the University of Washington cooperative institute (CICOES) collaborated in this data collection and related data processing and analysis. Deployment and recovery operations on this cruise were managed by EcoFOCI personnel from NOAA/PMEL, NOAA/AFSC and UW/CICOES. This dataset contains oceanographic and surface meteorological data in netCDF formatted files, which follow the Climate and Forecast metadata convention (CF) and the Attribute Convention for Data Discovery (ACDD). USF collected the data from their in-situ moored station named apk in the Coastal Waters of Florida and North Atlantic Ocean. SECOORA, which assembles data from USF and other sub-regional coastal and ocean observing systems of the southeast United States, submitted the data to NODC as part of NODC's Integrated Ocean Observing System Data Assembly Centers (IOOS DACs) Data Stewardship Program. Each month, NODC adds to this dataset the data collected during the previous month.
