This report includes the primary ocean station data collected in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean during cruise 9405 of the Nathaniel B. Palmer. The cruise began on 10 September 1994, in Punta Arenas, Chile and ended on 16 October in Lyttleton, New Zealand (Hellmer et al. 1995). Here we describe data acquisition and reduction procedures for the vertical profiling of conductivity - temperature - depth (CTD) and dissolved oxygen, and the processing of water samples for salinity, oxygen, nutrients, carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons. All CTD stations were occupied in the late winter/early spring sea ice field, in a zonal band extending from 65-72 S (Fig. 1). Originally intended as a winter reoccupation of the stations and track of NBP 9402 (Jacobs et al. 1994; Giulivi and Jacobs 1997), the work was subsequently combined with the second of two cruises focusing on sea ice properties (Jeffries et al. 1995). In addition, the sea ice and its snow cover effectively limited this cruise to the region north of the Antarctic continental shelf. Nevertheless, 16 deep stations sampled on cruise 9402 and on World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) lines S4 and P19S were revisited. The overall project objective was to obtain the first modern measurements in this largely unsampled region, at its seasonal extremes, in order to better understand the large-scale stratification and circulation, and ice-ocean interactions.

This dataset contains data from 84 high resolution CTD stations, collected 26 Dec 1999 to 8 Feb 2000 by R/V Nathaniel B Palmer. These data support the Antarctic Pack Ice Seals (APIS) project, funded by the US National Science Foundation grant #OPP9816086. Data were acquired using a SeaBird 911plus CTD and processed by the data originator with SeaBird data processing software. Temperature, salinity, and nutrients data were collected from CTD and bottle casts in the Pacific Ocean from the Nathaniel B. Palmer from 08 October 1996 to 05 November 1996. Data were collected as part of the US JGOFS Antarctic Environments Southern Ocean Process Study (AESOPS). CTD data include temperature and salinity profiles. Bottle data include concentration profiles of nitrate, nitrite, silicate, phosphate, ammonia, phaeopigment, and chlorophyll a.

Physical and meteorological other data were collected in the Amundsen and Bellingshausen Seas from the Nathaniel B. Palmer from 14 February 1994 to 31 February 1994. Data include in situ temperature, potential temperature, salinity, bottom depth, dissolved oxygen concentrations, wind speed, wind direction and air temperature. Data are in ASCII text.

Nutrients and other data were collected from CTD and bottle casts in the Antarctic Ocean from the Nathaniel B. Palmer from 18 October 1996 to 30 April 1997. Data were collected as part of the Ross Sea Process 1 Cruise project and the JGOFS, Antarctic Environments Southern Ocean Process Study. Data include water depths, ammonium concentrations, and urea concentrations.

Ocean pressure, temperature, and salinity data are reported from 85 CTD profiles acquired in the Bellingshausen Sea. These austral spring observations, taken along the continental shelf slope to a nominal depth of 500m (interspersed with a few full depth profiles), comprise a portion of several related data sets obtained during NBP07-09, from Punta Arenas to Punta Arenas, Chile. Additional sampling was undertaken for physical, geochemical and biological parameters of sea ice and upper ocean, as well as ocean currents and continuous underway mapping of sea surface properties, meteorological variables and bathymetry.

This dataset includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from NATHANIEL B. PALMER in the South Pacific Ocean from 2000-02-15 to 2000-03-24 and retrieved during cruise NBP-00_1 and Ross_Sea_320620000215. These data include CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-11 (CFC-11), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-113 (CFC-113), CHLOROFLUOROCARBON-12 (CFC-12), DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, SALINITY and WATER TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle. These data were collected by Stanley S. Jacobs of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University and William M. Smethie Jr. of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory as part of the CLIVAR_Ross_Sea_320620000215 dataset. The International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters.
