The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Use Program is responsible for compiling and disseminating the Nation's water-use data. Working in cooperation with local, State, and Federal agencies, the USGS has published an estimate of water use in the United States every 5 years, beginning in 1950. These 5-year compilations contain water-use estimates that are aggregated to the county level in the United States. This USGS data release contains summaries of method codes used in the 2015 national compilation of public supply, self-supplied domestic, thermoelectric, and irrigation water-use data. This data release also contains the county-level water-use estimates that support the evaluations in Luukkonen and others (2021). Finally, this data release contains summaries of regional medians and interquartile ranges from 1985 to 2015 that were used to highlight areas of unexpected variability, consistency and/or potential values that warrant further investigation. Estimated Use of Water in the United States County-Level Data for 2015

This dataset contains water-use estimates for 2015 that are aggregated to the county level in the United States. The U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS's) National Water Use Science Project is responsible for compiling and disseminating the Nation's water-use data. Working in cooperation with local, State, and Federal agencies, the USGS has published an estimate of water use in the United States every 5 years, beginning in 1950. Water-use estimates aggregated to the State level are presented in USGS Circular 1441, "Estimated Use of Water in the United States in 2015" (Dieter and others, 2018). This dataset contains the county-level water-use data that support the state-level estimates in Dieter and others 2018. This dataset contains data for public supply, domestic, irrigation, thermoelectric power, industrial, mining, livestock, and aquaculture water-use categories. First posted September 28, 2017, ver. 1.0 Revised June 19, 2018, ver. 2.0 Version 2.0: This version of the dataset contains total population data and water-use estimates for 2015 for the following categories: Public supply, domestic, irrigation, thermoelectric power, industrial, mining, livestock, and aquaculture. Data are aggregated to the county level. A value of "--" denotes that values were not estimated for an optional attribute. Some values in the public supply and domestic categories have been updated from those found in version 1.0 of this dataset. Version 1.0: This version of the dataset contains total population data and water-use estimates for the public supply and domestic categories for 2015 that are aggregated to the county level in the United States. A "--" in the attributes "PS-GWPop" or "PS-SWPop" denotes that values were not estimated for an optional attribute. All other occurrences of "--" denote data for an attribute in a water-use category that has not yet been released. Version 1.0 data are available upon request.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), collects data pertaining to the surface-water resources of Missouri. These data are collected as part of the Missouri Ambient Water-Quality Monitoring Network (AWQMN) and are stored and maintained by the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS) database. These data constitute a valuable source of reliable, impartial, and timely information for developing an improved understanding of the water resources of the State. Water-quality data collected between 1993 and 2017 were analyzed for long term trends and the network was investigated to identify data gaps or redundant data to assist MDNR on how to optimize the network in the future. Water budget results for a water availability assessment across the conterminous United States for water years 2010-2020

This data release contains results from a simple monthly water budget that includes water supply and consumptive use for thermoelectric, irrigation, and public supply for 12-digit Hydrologic Unit Codes (HUC12) across the conterminous United States for water years 2010-2020. These results were produced using an analysis pipeline that ingests water supply, consumptive use, and routing information and accumulates and routes the water balance through the HUC12 network (Miller and others, 2024; https://doi.org/10.5066/P14MPRDE ). Water budget results also include an assessment of supply and use imbalances within the context of historical climatic conditions to calculate a surface water supply and use index and when considering a range of environmental flow allocation methods.

Groundwater-quality data were collected from 648 wells as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment Project of the U.S. Geological Survey National Water-Quality Program and are included in this report. Most of the wells (514) were sampled from January through December 2016 and 60 of them were sampled in 2013 and 74 in 2014. The data were collected from seven types of well networks: principal aquifer study networks, which are used to assess the quality of groundwater used for public water supply; land-use study networks, which are used to assess land-use effects on shallow groundwater quality; major aquifer study networks, which are used to assess the quality of groundwater used for domestic supply; enhanced trends networks, which are used to evaluate the time scales during which groundwater quality changes; vertical flow-path study networks, which are used to evaluate changes in groundwater quality from shallow to deeper depths; flow path study networks, which are used to evaluate changes in groundwater quality from shallow to deeper depths over a horizontal distance; and modeling support studies, which are used to provide data to support groundwater modeling. Groundwater samples were analyzed for a large number of water-quality indicators and constituents, including major ions, nutrients, trace elements, volatile organic compounds, pesticides, radionuclides, and some special interest constituents (arsenic speciation, chromium [VI] and perchlorate). These groundwater quality data are tabulated in a U.S. Geological Survey Data Series Report DS-1124 which is available at https://dx.doi.org/XXXXXX and in this data release. Some data from environmental samples collected in 2013-14 and quality-control samples collected in 2012-15 also are included in the associated data release. Data from samples collected in 2016 are associated with networks described in this report and have not been published previously; data from samples collected between 2012 and 2015 are associated with networks described in previous reports in this data series (Arnold and others, 2016a,b, 2017a,b, 2018a,b). There are 23 data tables included in this data release and they are referenced as tables 1-13 and appendix tables 4.10-4.19 in the larger work citation. There are 36 tables that are part of the larger work citation; the 13 tables not included in the data release are summary tables derived from some of the other tables (tables 1.1, 2.2-2.3, 3.1, 4.1-4.9). A version of table 1 is included in both the text and data release. This compressed file contains 23 files of groundwater-quality data in ASCII text tab-delimited format and one corresponding metadata in xml format that describes all the tables and attributes.
