Oceanographic data collected during the Mountains in the Sea: Exploring the New England Seamount Chain 2003 on RV Atlantis in North Atlantic Ocean from July 11, 2003 - July 19, 2003 (NCEI Accession 0072308)
This summer, with the help of the Alvin submersible, a multidisciplinary team of scientists and educators visited several little known seamounts in the North Atlantic, along with at least one previously unexplored seamount, to study various aspects of deep-sea octocorals and other organisms living on and around the seamounts. The primary objective was to map, collect, and identify deepwater corals, fishes, and miscellaneous invertebrates from the seamounts, with special attention to whether corals are most abundant at the crest of the seamount and whether they form important habitat for other species, such as benthic fishes, when the corals are particularly abundant.

Oceanographic data collected during the Davidson Seamount 2002 expedition on the RV Western Flyer, in the North Pacific Ocean, southwest of Monterey, California from May 17, 2002 - May 24, 2002 (NCEI Accession 0072306)

This spring, scientists explored the first "undersea island" to be called a seamount. Davidson seamount, located 120 km Southwest of Monterey, California, is one of the largest known seamounts in U.S. waters. Although these geological features have been known about for quite some time, only recent technological advances allow for comprehensive studies. The exploration team was led by scientists from the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Collaborators included the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Oceanographic data collected during the Deep Water Corals of the Davidson Seamount 2006 expedition aboard R/V WESTERN FLYER in the North Pacific from 2006-01-26 to 2006-02-04 (NCEI Accession 0052881)

Building off the successes of an Office of Ocean Exploration (OE) expedition to Davidson Seamount in 2002, this project will focus on deep-water corals. The week-long expedition in 2002 was the initial effort to characterize the biology and geology of the Davidson Seamount, 1,250 - 3,700 meters deep off Central California. Many results and products from this cruise are relevant to OE, including ocean science issues, education, outreach, and resource management. The focus of the proposed 2005 cruise would be to expand on the exploratory results of our last seamount expedition to investigate processes that generated coral distribution patterns. We will use a simple model derived from results of the last cruise to test our understanding of coral distribution, and use this model to guide exploration in other regions of the Seamount (still over 99.98% unexplored.) Specific regions of the seamount will be targeted based on a topographic index, substratum type, and coral species depth records. Complementary studies of the biodiversity and population dynamics of seamount fauna will include collections of corals for taxonomic studies, and age and growth studies of corals using innovative radiometric techniques. Addressing the public interest in seamounts, corals, and exploration, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) will record imagery from Davidson Seamount to feature in an upcoming television series, co-produced with the Discovery Channel, for broadcast in the United States and internationally. The Sanctuary West Coast Visitor Center and Monterey Bay Aquarium have plans to feature seamounts and corals in future exhibits, and high-definition video imagery, as well as research findings will be pivotal in the exhibit development.

This dataset contains oceanographic data (ADCP, CTD, underway), submersible data, images, and documentation. The cruise focused on several seep sites, canyons, and hard bottom features located less than 100 nm offshore. The goal of this expedition was to validate several seep targets, image and map seeps, canyons (e.g., Keller, Pamlico, Hatteras, and unnamed canyons), and hard bottom features located between Virginia and Georgia.

This dataset contains oceanographic data collected on little or unknown areas of the continental slope between Rhode Island and Chesapeake Bay. The major driving objective during these dives was to conduct engineering trials of the ROV and focused outreach events. Dives in the area of Lindenkohl canyons were devoted to ROV engineering trials, dives in the area of Washington Canyon were focused on exploration, and dives at the head of Norfolk Canyon and the mid-Atlantic gas seep site focused on outreach operations. ROV dives were conducted mostly during the day, while CTD casts and acoustic mapping occurred when the ROV was on deck. Data acquisition from shipboard sensors includes navigation data, meteorological data (wind, air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure), and oceanographic data (thermosalinograph, remote temperature probe, sound velocity probe, bathythermograph).

This data set contains oceanographic data (CTD, Landers, Piston Cores) and event/sample logs. The project goal was to improve understanding of the planktonic and benthic communities (including corals) that reside in and around mid- and South-Atlantic canyon and cold seep habitats, including estimates of genetic connectivity among sites and trophic connectivity from the water column to benthic communities.
