The real time data of water temperature at varying depth bathythermograph (XBT) was recorded in stripcharts by the US Navy. Radio logs are forms that contain time, weather latitude/longitude, vessel id, ship id, etc. These are radioed every two hours to some military center. One line per strip chart. Some strip charts have time /date /ship id /latitude /longitude annotated on the strip chart. Thirty Three stripcharts and radio logs were submitted to NODC.

The data in this accession was collected from ship Sedco/BP 471 between January 28 and March 22, 1990. The real time data of water temperature at varying depth bathythermograph (XBT) was recorded in stripcharts by the Texas A&M University. Six stripcharts and radio logs were submitted to NODC. The XBT data from these stripcharts have been digitized and is present in the current NODC data storage system in C116 file format.

Data has been processed by NODC to the NODC standard Bathythermograph (XBT) (C116) format. The C116/C118 format contains temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data record was comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. Unlike the MBT Data File, in which temperature values were recorded at uniform 5 m intervals, the XBT data files contained temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths were recorded at the minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to accurately define the temperature curve. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of either 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m. Prior to July 1994, XBT data were routinely processed to one of these standard types. XBT data are now processed and loaded directly in to the NODC Ocean Profile Data Base (OPDB). Historic data from these two data types were loaded into the OPDB.

The accession contains water temperature and depth data collected from LEXA MAERSK and many other ships from September 1987 to April 1988. Data was collected by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA. The bathythermograph XBT data is available in C116 file format of NODC.

This dataset contains 14 sets of data collected as part of Shipboard Environmental data Acquisition System (SEAS) III program. The cruises were conducted using 10 different ships. The bathythermograph (XBT) data was collected between September 1, 1987 and April 10, 1992. The data was sent from the cruise ships to the National Ocean Service, Rockville, MD via telecommunication. This data is currently available in the C116 file format of NODC.

The depth, temperature, salinity, and oxygen data in this accession were provided by the Chinese National Oceanographic Data Center during 4th meeting of US/PRC Joint Coordination Panel for Data and Information Cooperation as part of World Ocean Circulation Experiment. Data were collected between January 1988 and February 1993 using ships XIANG YANG HONG 09, SHI YAN 3, and XIANG YANG HONG 05. The CTD data were submitted on two tapes and four diskettes.

The sea surface temperature data in this accession was collected in Sea of Japan. Data in this accession was collected over a six month period from thermistor. The data was collected between January 1, 1993 and June 30, 1993. Two magnetic tapes were submitted by Dr. Osamu Yamada of the Japanese Oceanographic Data Center, Maritime Safety Agency; Hydrographic Division, Tokyo, Japan. Data were collected by various methods (XBT, MBT, SD); parameters include latitude, longitude, and temperature. The documentation includes the record format and a sample tape dump.
