EK80 Water Column Sonar Data Collected During EN706
The Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research program (NES-LTER) is designed to improve our ability to predict how climate change will affect the dynamics of the shelf’s planktonic food webs and their ability to support the productivity of higher trophic levels. Ship-based field osbervations were conducted 4 times a year with multidisciplinary measurements of physical, biological, and chemical properties in the ocean.

During the project we characterized two open ocean eddies: one cyclonic and one anticyclonic in the waters south of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi in the Central North Pacific Ocean. We conducted CTDs with water collection for nutrients, chlorophyll, and eDNA, we conducted net tows to quantify and describe the zooplankton and micronekton, and to collect genetic voucher specimens. Throughout the project we intermittently collecte EK80 and ADCP data. **Just a note: The ADCP data was not continuous on this cruise, as we had to toggle between collecting ADCP and EK80 data. So ADCP was collected during station operations, and EK80 while we transited between stations. The TS data was collected continuously.

During the cruise, watercolumn sonar data was collected using EK80 with single frequency transcievers at 38, 70, 120, and 200 kHz frequencies (7 degree circular beam angles). Instrument successfully calibrated on 06/09/2022 and data collected with updated settings. Note: sound speed is not updated accoring to CTD - should be updated before use Ancillary data: CTD casts, ADCP (continuous during survey), TSG (continuous during survey)

From July 9-30, 2022 (Norfolk, VA to Horta, Faial, Azores) NOAA Ocean Exploration completed the Voyage to the Ridge 2 expedition (EX-22-05), a combined mapping and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) expedition to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and Azores Plateau. Operations during this 22-days at sea expedition included the completion of 10 successful ROV exploration dives in the vicinity the Azores and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge north of the Azores. ROV dives were conducted in water depths ranging from 420 m to 3350 m for a total of almost 53 hours of bottom time. EX-22-05 also collected 49,080 square kilometers of seafloor bathymetry and associated water column data using an EM304 multibeam sonar.
