The filles archived here contain supplemental information to support the publication titled 'First full census in 45 years of a large colony of breeding penguins at False Round Point, King George Island' currently in review at Polar Biology. The archived files include the polygons used for flight planning, the resulting orthomosaic image tiles and a full resolution orthomosaic image, the digital elevation model (DEM), and shapefiles identifying elevation contours and the location of the nesting aggregations of chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarcticus) and gentoo penguins (P. papua) from the aerial survey at False Round Point. The archive contains 5 files as described below. 1. FRPT_Flight_polygons: This zipped folder contain the .kml files with the polygons used to plan the aerial survey at False Round Point. The mission was flown by two UAS simultaneously over an eastern (FalseRoundPoint_East.kml) and a western (FalseRoundPoint_West.kml) portion of the peninsula. Note that limited availability of imagery to design the survey prior to flight resulted in the exclusion of the cliff and wider beach area directly east of the breeding area. Future surveys may wish to extend the eastern boundary further to the east to fully capture these features. 2. FRPT_Orthomosaic_tiles: This zipped folder contains contains 61 geoTif (.tif) tiles (10000x10000 pixels) that constitute the full orthomosaic of False Round Point. 3. FRPT_Orthomosaic: A full resolution .png image of the False Round Point survey area. 4. FRPT_DEM: The digital elevation model (.tif raster file) that corresponds to the orthomoasic of False Round Point. 5. FRPT_Shapfiles: This zipped folder contains shapefiles identifying elevation contours of the DEM (FRPT_contours[.shx, .shp, .prj, .qmd, .dbf, .cpg]) and locations of the nesting aggregations of chinstrap (FRPT_chinstrap[.shx, .shp, .prj, .qmd, .dbf, .cpg]) and gentoo penguins (FRPT_gentoo[.shx, .shp, .prj, .qmd, .dbf, .cpg])

The dataset contains geographic location estimates of Adelie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) tracked via Argos satellite telemetry in the Southern Ocean for the U.S. Antarctic Marine Living Resources project from 1996-10-29 to 2013-02-19. Birds were instrumented with back-mounted Argos satellite transmitters at the Copacabana Colony (62.21S, 58.42W) on King George Island during the austral summer breeding seasons (October - February) from 1996 to 2013. Typical deployments during the breeding season lasted 5 to 8 days, while some winter deployments lasted several months. The data set identifies the sex of the bird tracked (male, female, or unknown) and the age of the bird (adult). The data also identify the breeding stage of the bird during the summer tracking period (incubation, brood/guard, or creche) or is noted as 'winter' if tracked outside the summer breeding season. The data include the date (DD/MM/YYYY) and time (GMT) of the location estimate. Finally, a categorical estimate of uncertainty in the location estimate is provided by Argos quality codes (3,2,1,0,A,B).

Taken from the report: This document describes the results of the use of the APPLS (Aerial Photography Pyrometer LiDAR System) during underway science (sea ice) on the way to Davis, and later at Davis during resupply 2010/2011 (November 16 to 20, 2010). This document is primarily for Science Technical Support use. Portions of the report can be used to provide information on the results obtained to other parts of AAD. Some of this aerial photography has also been conducted in support of various AAS projects: AAS 3012 (ASAC_3012) AAS 3113 (ASAC_3113) AAS 2205 (ASAC_2205) AAS 2425 (ASAC_2425) AAS 3154 (ASAC_3154) AAS 3189 (ASAC_3189) A short list of the work carried out: 3012, 3113 This activity involved long duration over water/sea ice flights for the purposes of "Investigation of physical and biological processes in the Antarctic sea ice zone during spring using in-situ, aircraft and underwater observations". This activity was scheduled for prior to Davis, over pack ice far from shore. Two science specific flights were made, and one opportunistic (sea ice reconnaissance), for a total of 5 hours 19 minutes of data collection for dedicated science 2205 Priority 1 - Adelie Penguin Census Survey on the Islands in the Davis vicinity This task was a repeat of aerial census of Adelie penguins, conducted in 2009/2010 with coordinated ground counts of specific islands/colonies on Gardner, Magnetic, Lugg and Turner Islands. The ground counts were performed at the same time as the aerial survey, to compare aerial versus ground counts. Personnel from the CEMP Penguin Monitoring Program (Colin Southwell, Barbara Wienecke) performed ground counts coordinated with the flying on two days. The Flight lines were initially done on 2010/11/18 in bright sunlight, and then repeated on 2010/11/20 during overcast weather to compare the different image quality due to lack of shadows cast by the penguins. Priority 2 - Aerial photographic survey of the Svenner Group Islands Flights over Adelie Penguin colonies were performed at 750m, using 150mm lens, and then only over the islands known to host Adelie colonies. Flying time total = 5 hours, 51 minutes 2425 This task was to survey the Woop Woop Skiway, over an area of 320 square kilometres. Due to time constraints, only every 2nd line was flown after consultation with AAD Air-operations (Steve Daw and Matt Filipowski). Flying time total = 4 hours 25 minutes 3154 This task was to capture an aerial photograph of a Hawker Island Giant Petrel colony, being monitored by nest cameras. A run was conducted on 2010/11/19 in bright sunlight and also repeated on 2010/11/20 in flat light. Flying time total = 22 minutes 3189 This task was to survey potential sites, in the Vestfold Hills near Davis, for a Nuclear Test Ban Treaty monitoring installation. Flying time total = 29 minutes

Seabirds observed in this study are Adélie (Pygoscelis adeliae), chinstrap (P. antarctica), and gentoo (P. papua) penguins. The two study sites are the US AMLR Program sites at Cape Shirreff (Livingston Island) and Copacabana (King George Island) Antarctica.
Adelie penguin occupancy survey of islands along the Knox Coast, 2011

An occupancy survey in December 2009-February 2010 and January 2011 found a total of 6 islands along the Knox coast had populations of breeding Adelie penguins. The survey in 2009/10 was conducted from a fixed wing aircraft and oblique aerial photographs were taken of occupied sites. The aerial photographs were geo-referenced to satellite images or the coastline shapefile from the Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica (LIMA, tile E157) and the boundaries of penguin colonies were digitised from the geo-referenced photos. Bird species and population data, and related environmental data were collected from a transect following the coast of Antarctica. Data are contained in three sequential files: ANT 283, ANT 383 and ANT 483; data were originally recorded in EBCDIC. Five record types are included: location, environmental (wind, clouds, pressure, salinity), sea ice coverage, a comment record, and bird census record (age, species, sex, color, plumage, molt, behavior, habitat, and count). These data were collected by George L. Hunt at the University of California, Irvine. The documentation includes a map of the transect studied and a detailed description of the record format.

This data set contains water and air temperature data in addition to duration of time spent at temperature to provide estimates of daily activity and consequent demand for food during winter for gentoo penguins. These estimates are scarce for many polar seabirds, yet they are essential for assessing constraints on foraging effort, demand for food, and potential competition with local fisheries. We affixed archival temperature tags to gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) from two colonies in the South Shetland Islands to measure the frequency, timing, and duration of foraging trips and to estimate minimum food requirements during winter.
Adelie penguin occupancy survey of the Vestfold Hills, 2012

Occupancy surveys in November 2008 (Southwell and Emmerson 2013) found a total of 31 Adelie penguin breeding sites off the Vestfold Hills. The boundaries of breeding sub-colonies at 26 of these sites were subsequently mapped from vertical aerial photographs taken for abundance surveys on 18-21 November 2009. Two breeding sites were photographed obliquely from a helicopter using a hand-held camera on the 13 December 2012. Colony boundaries for these 2 sites were drawn and digitised by eye.
