FHEO - Fair Housing Act Cases Filed by Year and State
The Fair Housing Act Cases Filed by Year and State with the Bases dataset summarizes the cases filed as a result of complaints made regarding violations of the Fair Housing Act. The Fair Housing Act prohibits most discrimination in housing transactions based on federally recognized bases (race, religion, familial status, etc.) Cases are investigated by the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) within the Department of Housing and Urban Development or by state or local government agencies (FHAP agencies) who partner with FHEO to investigate these complaints. Cases may be conciliated or settled during the investigation process, or there may be reasons why a case needs to be administratively closed, or else the investigation will determine whether there was cause to believe discrimination occurred. If there is cause to believe discrimination occurred, the case will go through a legal adjudication process to be resolved.

The dataset is a list of all the Title VIII fair housing cases filed by FHEO and includes the case number, case name, filing date, state and county of the alleged violation, and the bases for the alleged discriminatory acts. The Federal bases are race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, familial status and retaliation for filing a fair housing complaint. Some of the bases have been broken out into more detailed groupings (Race - Asian, etc.) A single case may have multiple bases. The data can be aggregated to the county or state level to show patterns in the quantity and bases of fair housing complaints filed.
Fair Housing Assistance Program (FHAP) Grantees

This dataset denotes the locations and pertinent information for Fair Housing Assistance Program (FHAP) grantees. If such agencies are determined by FHEO to enforce state or local fair housing laws that are substantially equivalent to the federal Fair Housing Act, they can receive financial and operational assistance from FHEO to enforce such laws. FHAP agencies receive funding from HUD to support their efforts. Payments are made once a year after the end of the period of performance for that agency.
