Chlorophyll-a profiles were collected in the Atlantic Ocean and adjoining seas from March 2, 1961 to October 21, 1992. The data were collected by multiple institutions as part of the North Atlantic Chlorophyll Profile Data Set. This work was supported by funding from the European Space Agency and the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The README.pdf file in the about/ directory contains information about the file format and data originators.

The accession contains chlorophyll a and phaeophytin data collected by Florida State University in the North American coastline for three time periods in 1986. First data set was collected in February, second was collected in April and the last data set was collected in September of the same year. The principal investigator in this study was Dr. Richard Iverson. The data are in Lotus 1-2-3 format. Approximate study location was Atlantic coast; 26-39 degrees N and 71-80 degrees W. Parameters include: position, chlorophyll a (in milligrams per cubic meter) and phaeophytin (in milligrams per cubic meter). Samples were taken every two hours. Additional data associated with this study is filed under NODC reference numbers L00358-L00360.

The Profiles of Chlorophyll data from NASA Goddard and Phytoplankton wet weight data in this accession was submitted by Mr. Charles R. McClain of US National Aeronautic and Space Administration, Washington DC. The data was collected in 15 different oceans and compiled in SeaWiFS calibration/validation historical pigment database. There are two versions of the data base. One contains approx. 180,000 records for depths of 0-10 meters. A second file contains approx. 330,000 records and includes all available depths provided by the individual investigators. Detailed Documentation is available for data format. This dataset contains chlorophyll data from Biscayne Bay, collected by the University of Miami from March 1986 to February 1987 as part of the assessment of Plankton Resources and their Environment Interactions in Biscayne Bay, Florida program. The principal investigator was Dr. Larry Brand. The data parameters include: temperature salinity, chlorophyll-a, phaeopigments, percent chlorophyll-a (5-60 microns and > 60 microns). The data are in Lotus 123 format.
