The feature classes HYDROL and HYDROP contain vector lines and polygons representing the coastal shoreline and hydrography used in the creation of the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) for Great Lakes - Straits of Mackinac study area. The HYDROP (hydrography polygons) layer delineates the shoreline, and identifies areas as either Land or Water. The HYDROL (hydrography lines) layer includes features that are not captured in the HYDROP data layer, such as breakwaters, fenders, groins, jetties, and piers. The study area includes the Straits of Mackinac, nearby portions of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, and adjacent lands and waters in northern Michigan. As a whole, the ESI data characterize the marine and coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil, and include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources.

The study area includes the United States portion of Lake Erie, covering the coastal portions of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York from the Michigan/Ohio border to the west to the New York/Canada border to the east. These data sets contain information about the following resources: National Register of Historic Places historical sites, beaches, and heliports in Lake Erie.
