San Francisco Land Use - 2020
Please see Map of Land Use - 2023 for most recent data Summary Land Use 2020: Land use categories for every parcel in San Francisco. The land use categories are derived from a range of City and commercial databases. Where building square footages were missing from these databases they were derived from a LIDAR survey flown in 2007. Land use categories are as follows (units are square feet): - CIE = Cultural, Institutional, Educational - MED = Medical - MIPS = Office (Management, Information, Professional Services) - MIXED = Mixed Uses (Without Residential) - MIXRES = Mixed Uses (With Residential) - PDR = Industrial (Production, Distribution, Repair) - RETAIL/ENT = Retail, Entertainment - RESIDENT = Residential - VISITOR = Hotels/Motels - VACANT = Vacant - ROW = Right-of-Way - OPENSPACE = Open Space Other attributes are: - RESUNITS = Residential Units - BLDGSQFT = Square footage data - YRBUILT = year built - TOTAL_USES = Business points from Dun & Bradstreet were spatially aggregated to the closest parcel, and this field is the sum of the square footage fields The subsequent fields (CIE, MED, MIPS, RETAIL, PDER & VISITOR) were derived using the NAICS codes supplied in the Dun & Bradstreet dataset, and the previous TOTAL_USES column. PREDOMINANT LAND USES: - RESIDENTIAL: Housing--from single family to multifamily to high-rise apartment complexes. - CIE - CULTURAL, INDUSTRIAL, EDUCATIONAL:Any cultural, institutional, medical or educational place such as a museum, zoo, hospital, medical center, college, theatre, social service, or membership organization. - MIPS (generally for offices):Management, information, and professional activities such as finance, insurance, and real estate (FIRE), business, legal, and public administration. - RETAIL/ENT(Retail/Entertainment)Shopping and direct consumer services, amusement, recreation and personal services, restaurants and bars -- from neighborhood-serving to region-serving. - PDR (Production/Distribution/Repair):Wholesale trade, showrooms, manufacturing and materials processing, warehousing, repair, businesses, construction, transportation, communications, utilities. - VISITOR:Hotels and motels.PUBLIC:Publicly owned parks, recreation, and open spaces, as well as some highway right of ways. - VACANT:An empty or undeveloped lot. - MIXED USES:Combined uses, such as office and retail, industrial-retail-entertainment, or industrial and office, etc. where no one use predominates. - MIXEDRES (Residential Mixed):Mostly housing with one or more other use (office, retail, industrial)on the ground floor). The determining factor for a parcel's LANDUSE is if the square footage of any non-residential use is 80% or more of its total uses. Otherwise it becomes MIXED. In the case where RESIDENT use has some square footage of non-residential use, this is mainly accessory uses such as home businesses, freelancers, etc.

A. SUMMARY This data is an annual snapshot of existing land use as of March of the indicated year for every parcel in the City and County of San Francisco. This year's 2023 data was produced from the Land Use 2020, updated for residential properties using the Planning Department's permit database and current 2023 Assessor-Recorder data. The commercial data was not updated; the commercial data will be updated in next year's 2024 release. Each row of data corresponds to a parcel with 16 columns (fields or attributes) of information about each parcel, as described below. B. HOW THE DATASET IS CREATED The dataset is assembled from a range of City and commercial databases, including Assessor’s office and Dun & Bradstreet for commercial land uses. C. UPDATE PROCESS A new dataset will be added annually without updating previous years’ data. D. A. SUMMARY This data represents the boundaries of City-owned lands maintained in the City's Facility System of Record (FSR). Note: Not all lands are within the City and County proper. The City owns properties outside of its boundaries, including lands managed by SF Recreation and Parks, SF Public Utilities Commission, and other agencies. Certain lands are managed by following agencies which are not directly part of the City and County of San Francisco, but are included here for reference: San Francisco Housing Authority (SFHA), San Francisco Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure (OCII), and City College of San Francisco. B. HOW THE DATASET IS CREATED The Enterprise GIS program in the Department of Technology is the technical custodian of the FSR. This team creates and maintains this dataset in conjunction with the Real Estate Division and the Capital Planning Program of the City Administrator’s Office, who act as the primary business data stewards for this data. C. UPDATE PROCESS There are a handful of events that may trigger changes to this dataset: 1. The sale of a property 2. The leasing of a property 3. The purchase of a property 4. The change in jurisdiction of a property (e.g. from MTA to DPW) 5. The removal or improvement of the property Each of these changes triggers a workflow that updates the FSR. The Real Estate Division and Capital Planning make updates on an ongoing basis. The full dataset is reviewed quarterly to ensure nothing is missing or needs to be corrected. Updates to the data, once approved, are immediately reflected in the internal system and are updated here in the open dataset on a monthly basis. D. HOW TO USE THIS DATASET See here for an interactive map of all the City lands in this dataset. To track the facilities on City lands, join this dataset to the City Facilities dataset using the land_id field. If you see an error in the data, you can submit a change request with the relevant information to dtis.helpdesk@sfgov.org. Census 2020: Tracts for San Francisco

A. SUMMARY Census tracts boundaries in San Francisco county. Census tracts are small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of a county. They are uniquely numbered in each county with a numeric code. Census tracts average about 4,000 inhabitants ranging from 1,200 – 8,000. More information on the census tracts can be found here. B. HOW THE DATASET IS CREATED The boundaries are uploaded from TIGER/Line shapefiles provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. C. UPDATE PROCESS This dataset is static. Changes to the census tract boundaries are tracked in multiple datasets. See here for 2000 and 2010 census tract boundaries. D. A. SUMMARY This dataset contains population and demographic estimates and associated margins of error obtained and derived from the US Census. The data is presented over multiple years and geographies. The data is sourced primarily from the American Community Survey. B. HOW THE DATASET IS CREATED The raw data is obtained from the census API. Some estimates as published as-is and some are derived. C. UPDATE PROCESS New estimates and years of data are appended to this dataset. To request additional census data for San Francisco, email support@datasf.org D. HOW TO USE THIS DATASET The dataset is long and contains multiple estimates, years and geographies. To use this dataset, you can filter by the overall segment which contains information about the source, years, geography, demographic category and reporting segment. For census data used in specific reports, you can filter to the reporting segment. To use a subset of the data, you can create a filtered view. A. SUMMARY This dataset contains San Francisco Board of Supervisor district boundaries approved by the San Francisco Redistricting Task Force in April 2022 following redistricting based on the 2020 Decennial Census. B. HOW THE DATASET IS CREATED The dataset was created from the final map submitted by the San Francisco Redistricting Task Force. Boundaries in this map were decided using data from the 2020 Census on the number of people living in each census block in the City and County. This data includes the number of individuals incarcerated in facilities under the control of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation based on their last known residential address. This information is made available by the Statewide Database based on U.S. Census Bureau Census Redistricting Data (P.L. 94-171). These map boundaries were trimmed to align with the city and county's physical boundaries for greater usability. This trimming mainly consisted of excluding the water around the City and County from the boundaries. C. UPDATE PROCESS Supervisor District boundaries are updated every 10 years following the federal decennial census. The Supervisor District boundaries reflected in this dataset will remain unchanged. A new dataset will be created after the next decennial census and redistricting process are completed. The dataset is manually updated as new members of the Board of Supervisors take office. The most recent manual update date is reflected in the 'data_as_of' field. Once the redistricting process is completed after the next decennial census and a new dataset is published, this dataset will become static and will no longer be updated. D. HOW TO USE THIS DATASET This dataset can be joined to other datasets for analysis and reporting at the Supervisor District level. If you are building an automated reporting pipeline using Socrata API access, we recommend using this dataset if you'd like your boundaries to remain static. If you would like the boundaries to automatically update after each decennial census to reflect the most recent Supervisor District boundaries, see the Current Supervisor Districts dataset or the Current Supervisor Districts (trimmed to remove water and other non-populated City territories) dataset. SUMMARY San Francisco’s Existing Buildings Energy Performance Ordinance requires owners of non-residential buildings over 10,000 square feet to annually benchmark and disclose energy performance. On behalf of City agencies, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) benchmarks and reports energy use for a portfolio of approximately 500 public facilities buildings. The performance of public facilities can be examined in an interactive report at https://bit.ly/SFMunicipalBenchmarking, and annual reports from 2011-present are available there as well. This dataset presents the energy performance and basic characteristics for public facilities that is visualized by the SFPUC’s interactive report. Census 2020: Blocks for San Francisco Clipped to the Shoreline

A. SUMMARY Census blocks with Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay water clipped out. Census blocks are the smallest geographic area for which the Bureau of the Census collects and tabulates decennial census data, are formed by streets, roads, railroads, streams and other bodies of water, other visible physical and cultural features, and the legal boundaries shown on Census Bureau maps. More information on the census tracts can be found here. B. HOW THE DATASET IS CREATED The boundaries are uploaded from TIGER/Line shapefiles provided by the U.S. Census Bureau and clipped using the water boundaries provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. C. UPDATE PROCESS This dataset is static. Changes to the census blocks are tracked in multiple datasets. See here for 2000 and 2010 census tract boundaries. D.
