This data package contains a series of datasets collected for the Mid-Atlantic Network’s (MIDN) Benthic Macroinvertebrate Monitoring Program. These data were collected during the development of the monitoring program prior to the publication of the monitoring protocol (Dammeyer 2018; https://irma.nps.gov/DataStore/Reference/Profile/2256449). The monitoring program was established to serve 9 national parks in Pennsylvania and Virginia spanning the Piedmont and Coastal Plain of the Mid-Atlantic region. The program was established in partnership with Appalachian Aquatic Consultants and was implemented using methods described in a draft monitoring document (Voshell and Hiner, unpublished). These methods were used to collect data from 2009 through the spring of 2018. During that time, slight changes in methodology occurred (primarily in how macroinvertebrate samples were composited; see metadata file for further information). This data package is limited to those data that were collected using the methodology developed in partnership with Appalachian Aquatic Consultants. The network began the transition to state-based monitoring methods in 2016, published a state-based protocol in 2018, and fully transitioned to state-based methods in 2019. No data collected using state-based methods are included in this data package. The datasets provided in this package are intended to serve as an archive of the data that was collected using the initial methods and is relevant for analytical purposes. Additionally, these data, documentation of procedures, and associated supporting products have been archived locally.

This file has a listing of benthic macroinvertebrate taxa found in samples collected from coastal waters of Isle Royale and Chequamegon Bay (both in Lake Superior) in 2012 and 2013 respectively, This dataset is associated with the following publication: Meredith, C., A. Data in this package were collected from 2007-2024 as part of the Southern Colorado Plateau Network's long-term aquatic macroinvertebrate monitoring program. Data and subsequent analyses can be found in Cross References.

This database export was created to share the aquatic macroinvertebrate and corresponding habitat data collected from the Shenandoah National Park Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Monitoring program.

Data from a set of studies that ran from 1977-1978, and 1980-1982, around the site of Gaillard Island, Mobile Bay, Alabama, before, during, and after its construction (1979-1981). Extant data from the MESC Data Management System include sediment particle size distribution (001), identification and enumeration of benthic fauna (002), discrete hydrography and turbidity (003) during and after island construction, and discrete hydrography and turbidity before island construction (004).

This dataset provides analysis results for recent status of and trends in 44 fish and 99 macroinvertebrate assemblages in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. For both biological datasets a multi-metric index, metric of assemblage sensitivity, functional feeding group metric and habitat preference metric was selected for analysis. Sites used to calculate trends required a minimum of 7 years of data. Status was calculated as a three-year average by averaging metric values for the most recent three years of data at each site and trends were calculated using generalized additive models (GAM) in the R package 'mgcv' for the full window of sample years at each site. These data are from EPA's national coastal monitoring programs and include data from the water column, sediments, and biota, 1990-2015.
