Wetland habitats provide critical ecosystem services to the surrounding landscape, including nutrient and pollutant retention, flood mitigation, and carbon storage. This EnviroAtlas dataset uses data about existing wetlands to predict areas across the conterminous United States with landscape characteristics that are likely to support wetland habitats, or potential wetland area (PWA). These data along with data on existing wetland locations can be useful for identifying sites for restoration or construction of wetlands. This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to EnviroAtlas. EnviroAtlas (https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas) allows the user to interact with a web-based, easy-to-use, mapping application to view and analyze multiple ecosystem services for the contiguous United States. The dataset is available as downloadable data or as an EnviroAtlas map service. Data includes edaphic and vegetation field data from four Oregon tidal wetlands. National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) classification: low marsh, high marsh, and palustrine tidal marsh are included for each of the sites as a means of comparing parameters between the NWI classes and actual field data. Vegetation data include number and types of plant assemblages, non-native plant cover, and species richness. Edaphic data include pore water salinity, sediment carbon and nitrogen content, grain size and marsh surface elevation. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) created the Degree Flowlines and Culverts geospatial datasets representing potential culvert locations along with flowlines within the Connecting River Systems Restoration Assessment (CRSRA) study area. Both datasets will be served in the Great Lakes Wetlands Restoration Area mapping application [https://glcwra.wim.usgs.gov/]. The map-based user interface can be used by stakeholders to find potential areas for successful wetlands restoration. Each flowline was assigned a connectivity score describing its level of connectedness to the lake outlet. Low numbers represent fewer disconnections, such as culverts or road crossings, between the reach and the water body requiring no flow network modification to restore the area. Rock detention and earthen berm structures were built on the Cienega San Bernardino over the course of four decades, beginning in 1984 and continuing to the present. Previous research findings show that restoration supports and even increases vegetation health despite ongoing drought conditions in this arid watershed. However, the extent of restoration impacts is still unknown despite qualitative observations of improvement in surrounding vegetation amount and vigor. We analyzed spatial and temporal trends in vegetation greenness and soil moisture by applying the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalized difference infrared index (NDII) to one dry summer season Landsat path/row from 1984 to 2016. The study area was divided into zones and spectral data for each zone was analyzed and compared with precipitation record using statistical measures including linear regression, Mann– Kendall test, and linear correlation. NDVI and NDII performed differently due to the presence of continued grazing and the effects of grazing on canopy cover; NDVI was better able to track changes in vegetation in areas without grazing while NDII was better at tracking changes in areas with continued grazing. Restoration impacts display higher greenness and vegetation water content levels, greater increases in greenness and water content through time, and a decoupling of vegetation greenness and water content from spring precipitation when compared to control sites in nearby tributary and upland areas. Our results confirm the potential of erosion control structures to affect areas up to 5 km downstream of restoration sites over time and to affect 1 km upstream of the sites.

This project was designed to understand ecosystem structure as a driver of climatic, habitat, and hydrological services in heterogeneous restored wetlands. The survey area covers Sherman, Twitchell, and Bouldin islands in California for a total of approximately 63 km2
