Rail Mileposts
The Rail Mileposts dataset was updated on June 15, 2025 and was created on July 15, 2025 by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). The FRA Mileposts feature layer is a spatial reference file compiled from multiple sources and displays approximate point locations of mileposts along the FRA rail network wiithin the United States. It is intended for general reference purposes only. The rail lines and mileposts are privately owned and may be changed without notice. As a result, this file may not reflect current conditions. Users should contact the appropriate railroad to verify milepost numbers and their locations. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Office Locations dataset was created on October 13, 2022 from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). These locations show FRA office locations, based on railroad company and Safety Management Teams (SMTs). The Safety Management Teams serve as the Office of Railroad Safety's main liaison with the senior leadership of the Nation's railroads. Each of the nine Safety Management Teams is assigned to either a Class I railroad or a group of railroads and provides safety oversight of the respective railroad system(s). The Safety Management Teams represent FRA with the railroads, and they communicate and coordinate with FRA's Staff Directors, Accident Analysis Branch, Audit Management Program, and other Safety Management Teams.

The Railroad Bridges dataset was compiled on October 14, 2022 from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). A railroad bridge is defined as “Railroad bridge means any structure with a deck, regardless of length, which supports one or more railroad tracks, or any other undergrade structure with an individual span length of 10 feet or more located at such a depth that it is affected by live loads.” based on the Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR Part 237). The FRA does not have a mandate to inspect railroad bridges: these inspections are required by the owner of the track. The FRA will use this railroad bridge dataset to determine the number of bridges per railroad, state, etc. and will assist in determining priority field activities.

Staff within the FTA regions provide support in cities/regions with greater transit activities. All these officials develop and manage grants. FTA also overseas safety measures.

The National Transit Map - Agencies dataset was compiled on September 09, 2024 from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). The National Transit Map (NTM) is a nationwide catalog of fixed-guideway and fixed-route transit service in America. It is compiled using General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) Schedule data. The GTFS Schedule documentation is available at, https://gtfs.org/schedule/. The NTM Agencies dataset represents the physical addresses of participating transit agencies. Regarding data coverage and licenses, starting in Report Year 2023, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has required National Transit Database (NTD) Reporters to submit General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) data. Reporters will submit GTFS during their reporting period, which is determined by their fiscal year end date. All GTFS data submitted to the NTD will enter the public domain. Prior to the GTFS requirement, transit agencies voluntarily participated in the NTM and granted the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 United States (CC-BY-3.0) license. This dataset depicts NHTSA's Regional Operations and Program Delivery Office regional boundaries. It identifies which states and territories are associated with each region. NHTSA's regions help States use data to identify their highway safety challenges, evaluate safety programs and activities, and provide technical assistance to State program managers to support the implementation of impactful behavioral highway safety programs.

The National Transit Map - Routes dataset was compiled on September 09, 2024 from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). The National Transit Map (NTM) is a nationwide catalog of fixed-guideway and fixed-route transit service in America. It is compiled using General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) Schedule data. The NTM Routes dataset shows transit routes, which is a group of trips that are displayed to riders as a single service. To display the route alignment and trips for each route, this dataset combines the following GTFS files: routes.txt, trips.txt, and shapes.txt. The GTFS Schedule documentation is available at, https://gtfs.org/schedule/. To improve the spatial accuracy of the NTM Routes, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) adjusts transit routes using context from the submitted GTFS source data and/or from other publicly available information about the transit service.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Pipeline Safety Regions dataset was compiled on October 04, 2022 from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). PHMSA’s Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) is responsible for protecting people and the environment from pipeline failures by analyzing pipeline safety and accident data; evaluating which safety standards need improvement and where new rulemakings are needed; setting and enforcing regulations and standards for the design, construction, operation, maintenance or abandonment of pipelines by pipeline companies; educating operators, states and communities on how to keep pipelines safe; facilitating research and development into better pipeline technologies; training state and federal pipeline inspectors; and administering grants to states and localities for pipeline inspections, damage prevention and emergency response. The PHMSA Pipeline Safety Regions layer contains polygon features representing each of the five regions, Central, Eastern, Southern, Southwest, and Western, that make up PHMSA’s Office of Pipeline Safety. Each region office is charged with ensuring the safe, reliable, and environmentally sound operation of the nation's pipeline infrastructure. Despite regional divisions the jurisdiction of PHMSA staff is nationwide and not limited to their regional area of responsibility.
