Work Zone Data Initiative Partnership
ITS DataHub has partnered with the work zone data community, Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Work Zone Data Initiative (WZDI), and the broader Work Zone Data Working Group to create the following suite of proof-of-concept tools for work zone feeds compliant with the Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx) specification. This data story describes those tools, focusing on the WZDx Feed Registry and the WZDx Data Archive.

Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx) Feed Registry
This dataset contains the up-to-date metadata on Work Zone feeds that meet the Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx) specifications and is registered with USDOT ITS DataHub. The current work zone data from each feed can be accessed through their respective API links. Some links provide direct access, while others require a user to create their own API access key first. Please see the attached API Key Instructions document to learn how to sign up for API keys for the requisite feeds. The ITS Work Zone Sandbox, contains an archive of work zone data collected from each feed at a rate of at least every 15 minutes. This is not intended as a replacement for the work zone feeds and in many cases does not update as frequently as the feed does.
Maricopa County Regional Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx) v3.0 Feed Sample
The WZDx Specification enables infrastructure owners and operators (IOOs) to make harmonized work zone data available for third party use. The intent is to make travel on public roads safer and more efficient through ubiquitous access to data on work zone activity. Specifically, the project aims to get data on work zones into vehicles to help automated driving systems (ADS) and human drivers navigate more safely. MCDOT leads the effort to aggregate and collect work zone data from the AZTech Regional Partners. A continuously updating archive of the WZDx feed data can be found at ITS WorkZone Data Sandbox. The live feed is currently compliant with WZDx specification version 3.0.

Iowa 4.0 Work Zone Data Exchange Feed Example
This dataset provides archived lane closure occurrences within the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) highway system in a tabular format. The ITS JPO has collections from 23 states including Iowa covering various parts of the time period from 10/2019 to 08/2024 depending on when the feed was active. The data is split into two archive files, the raw data contains the collection of .json or .geojson files exactly as they were on the individual state’s WZDx feed at the time of collection. The processed data is organized by work zone, so that as information about the work zone changed through feed updates they would be collected in a single file for that work zone. Connected Vehicle Pilot (CVP) Open Data
ITS JPO's Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment Program integrates connected vehicle research concepts into practical and effective elements to enhance existing operational capabilities. Data were collected throughout each pilot to facilitate independent evaluations of the use of connected vehicle technology on real roadways. To encourage additional study and reuse of these data, ITS DataHub has partnered with each pilot site to make sanitized and anonymized tabular and non-tabular data from these projects available to the public. This article gives you a brief overview of what each pilot focused on and what types of CV Pilot data and tools are available on ITS DataHub.
