BT station and environmental data were collected during NOAA research cruises between 1949 and 1973 throughout the Pacific Ocean. Data collected include thermocline depth, sea surface temperature, air temperature, surface salinity, ten-meter temperature, wind direction and speed, barometer reading, weather, cloud type and amount, sea condition, visibility, secchi depth, and forel scale. The BT data were submitted to NCEI and are accessible through their website (https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/ ).

The data was sent from the cruise ships to the National Ocean Service, Rockville, MD via telecommunication. This data is currently available in the C116 file format of NODC.

The Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD) and other data were collected in NE Pacific (limit-180). Data was collected from Ship POINT SUR and sent to shore via telecommunication. The data was collected over a period spanning from February 14, 1991 and November 3, 1991. Data was submitted in four files by Mr. Paul Jessen, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA. Data has been processed and is available in F022-CTD-Hi Resolution file format of NODC. F022 High-resolution CTD data is collected from high resolution (conductivity-temperature-depth) instruments. As they are lowered and raised in the oceans, these electronic devices provide nearly continuous profiles of temperature, salinity and other parameters. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering or obtained by interpolation and may be reported at depth intervals as fine as 1 m. Cruise and instrument information, position, date, time and sampling interval are reported for each station. Environmental data at the time of the cast (meteorological and sea surface conditions) may also be reported. The data record comprises values of temperature, salinity or conductivity, density (computed sigma-t) and possibly dissolved oxygen or transmissivity at specified depth or pressure levels. Data may be reported at either equally or unequally spaced depth or pressure intervals.

This dataset contains forty one sets of data collected as part of Shipboard Environmental data Acquisition System (SEAS) III program. The cruises were conducted using sixteen different ships. The bathythermograph (XBT) data was collected between September 9, 1987 and October 28, 1991. The data containing 2,454 observations were sent from the cruise ships to the National Ocean Service, Rockville, MD via telecommunication. This data is currently available in the C116 file format of NODC. The data type C116 contained temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data record was comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. The XBT data files contained temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths were recorded at the minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to accurately define the temperature curve. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of either 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m.
