This is an archive of underway meteorological and TSG data from the Bering Strait mooring cruise on the research vessel Norseman II, from Nome to Nome (AK), 4th-14th July 2023. A comparison between met data from the previous system and ERA, JRA and NCEP data, suggested that the 2021 data from the new system were too high (~2m/s) for wind speed, too low (~2degC)for temperature, and too low (~2hPa) for air pressure. That was based on a calibration done under less than ideal conditions. The system was recalibrated before the 2022 cruise, in the anticipation that would improve the data, however it has not yet been possible to make the same comparison to the ERA, JRA, and NCEP data to see if this has indeed fixed the issue. = thermosalinograph - raw Julian Day from Seasave system subject to GPS Roll over error. This is corrected in the data archived. - seachest was erroneously isolated from seawater intake at start of cruise. This was corrected 6th July 0615 GMT. Seachest data before this time are not measuring in situ water, and thus values have been set to a dummy value of 9999. This problem did not affect intake temperature. - raw depth data were frequently noisy. Flyers over 62m have been linearly interpolated from neighboring points 11) Other related data sets: = these data were taken on a mooring deployment cruise, which placed 3 moorings (A2-23, A3-23, A4-23) in the Bering Strait region. These moorings are part of a long-term time-series started in 1990 = prior mooring cruises to the region have collected underway data. Bering Strait Mooring Cruise Underway Data 2022 This is an archive of underway data from the Bering Strait mooring cruise on the research vessel Norseman II, from Nome to Nome, 8th-19th September 2022. The cruise collected 3 types of underway data: meteorological (including wind velocity, air temperature and pressure and relative humidity); thermosalinograph (temperature and conductivity); and vessel-mounted ADCP (with bottom tracking). For full parameter list, see data file headers. To avoid sediment clogging of the thermosalinograph, that system was turned off while the ship was in Port Clarence during a large storm (~16-18 September 2022).

Mooring deployments were funded by the NSF-Arctic Observing Network award PLR-1758565 (PIs: Woodgate and Peralta-Ferriz). The mooring work required 2 dedicated cruises: - in 2021 (7th - 17th July), a ~ 11 day cruise on the US vessel Norseman2 deployed the moorings. Some CTD sections were run on this cruise, and those data are archived separately. - in 2022 (8th-19th September), a ~ 12 day cruise on the US vessel Norseman2 recovered the moorings. Some CTD sections were run on this cruise, and those data are archived separately. In 2021, a total of three moorings were deployed: - two moorings (A2 and A4) in the US channel of the strait, - one mooring (A3) at a site just north of the strait. Unfortunately, mooring A2 was lost. Moorings carry a variety of instruments, listed in the file "Bering_Strait_Moorings_2021-2022_NSFAON_ReadMe_versFeb2024.txt" included in this dataset. Mooring deployments were funded by the NSF-Arctic Observing Network award PLR-1758565 (PIs: Woodgate and Peralta-Ferriz). Some CTD sections were run on this cruise, and those data are archived separately. - in 2021 (7th - 17th July), a ~ 11 day cruise on the US vessel Norseman2 recovered all the moorings. Some CTD sections were run on this cruise, and those data are archived separately. In both 2019 and 2020, a total of three moorings were deployed (each year): - two moorings (A2 and A4) in the US channel of the strait, - one mooring (A3) at a site just north of the strait. In what follows, mooring names include a two digit suffix to represent year of deployment. Although the 2019 moorings would normally have been recovered in 2020, the global COVID-19 pandemic prevented this. Instead, the 2020 cruise only deployed a further 3 new moorings (each ~ 400m west of their usual positions). All 6 moorings were recovered in 2021. Sites A2, and A3 were established in 1990. A2 and A3 have been occupied almost continuously (all years except 96-97) since then. Site A4 was established in 2001. Mooring location A2 is in the middle of the eastern (Alaskan side) channel. Mooring location A3 is just north of the strait, immediately east of the Russian-US EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) line. Experience has shown that site A3 samples both eastern and western channel water. Mooring location A4 is close to the Alaskan coast and allows measurement of the Alaskan Coastal Current.

This dataset contains water temperature, salinity, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and suspended particulate matter taken by CTD, nets, and other instrumentation in the Bering and Chukchi Seas from the research vessel icebreaker Xue Long during the 5-th Chinese National Arctic Scientific Research Expedition (CHINARE5). The objectives of the CHINARE5 were to improve understanding of basic environmental information of marine hydrology in summer 2012 in areas of the Bering Sea, Chukchi Sea, Chukchi Sea Rise, and to provide basic information for global climate change research. The main work was undertaken through sectional observations of the aforementioned sea areas. Data are in CNV, XLSX formats. This dataset is U.S. State Department MSR U2012-020 as part of the World Data Services for Geophysics and Oceanography.

Mooring deployments were funded by the ONR award N00014-13-1-0468 (PI: Woodgate) with shiptime support from the concurrent NSF-AON awards (Award ARC0855748, PIs: Woodgate, Weingartner, Lindsay and Whitledge; and Award PLR-1304052, PIs: Woodgate, Heimbach and Nguyen), in collaboration with the NOAA RUSALCA (Russian-US Long Term Census of the Arctic) program. The mooring work required 2 dedicated cruises. In 2013 (3rd - 10th July), a ~ 8 day cruise on the US vessel Norseman2 deployed the moorings. Some CTD sections were run on this cruise, and those data are archived separately. In 2014 (30th June - 7th July), a ~ 8 day cruise on the US vessel Norseman2 deployed the moorings. Some CTD sections were run on this cruise, and those data are archived separately. For 2013 to 2014, a total of three moorings were deployed. Two moorings (A2 and A4) in the US channel of the strait and one mooring (A3) at a site just north of the strait. In what follows, mooring names include a two digit suffix to represent year of deployment. Sites A2, and A3 were established in 1990. ChukSA Climatology, Version 1.0: Ocean velocity profiles collected by ADCP in the Chukchi Sea, Bering Strait, and Bering Sea in 2002-2022 (NCEI Accession 0283043)

The ChukSA climatology is comprised of shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler (SADCP) ocean velocity datasets collected by research vessels while working in, or transiting through, the Chukchi Sea region. SADCP datasets included in the climatology have received high- level post-processing, including manual editing and removal of estimated barotropic tides, and have been combined into a unique dataset of direct ocean velocity measurements. As of early 2023, ChukSA includes 95 datasets from 57 cruises by six ships spanning 16 years since 2002. To create the ChukSA climatology, the creators searched for SADCP datasets with cruise tracks that fell within the specified region of 65°-75° N and 170°-150° W. This was done by contacting colleagues and researchers who regularly work in the Chukchi region and by reaching out to the UNOLS Rolling Deck Repository (R2R) team, which archives cruise metadata and data from research vessels, to collect SADCP datasets from research missions as well as transits. Please see below for the original dataset citations and acknowledgements. The original datasets identified were retrieved in a variety of formats (from varying SADCP systems/manufacturers), with a wide range of post-processing completed. Frank Bahr (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) reviewed each dataset identified and assessed the need for post-processing. When necessary, appropriate post-processing methods were applied to datasets to ensure that all entries in the climatology were appropriate for climatological analysis. Post-processing methods are summarized in 'ChukSA_readme_final.pdf', with extensive details for each dataset available in a separate document titled ‘ChukSA_Appendix_A.pdf’. Final velocity measurements included in ChukSA are high quality and ready for use by the community. Data are in NetCDF.

Oceanographic, meteorological and physical data collected from Saildrone 126 and Saildrone 128 in the Bering Sea from 2015-04-26 to 2016-09-03 (NCEI Accession 0187987)

This dataset contains near-surface measurements of oceanographic, meteorological and physical data collected in situ from two autonomous surface vehicles Saildrone 126 and 128 in the Bering Sea in 2015 and 2016. The 2015 experiment took place between 2015-04-26 and 2015-07-28 and the 2016 experiment took place between 2016-05-23 and 2016-09-03. Saildrone is an unmanned autonomous sailboat powered by wind and solar energy. Under the umbrella of a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory and Saildrone LLC, these vehicles were deployed on experimental missions in 2015 and 2016 to assess the viability of this observing platform. The major field program in FY15 and 16 was the test deployment of two saildrones which followed ice retreat in the Bering Sea, sailing from Dutch Harbor to Nome. Both saildrones had a variety of sensors and instruments consisting of thermosalinograph, ADCP, echo sounder, oxygen optode, fluorometer, SST IR pyrometer, anemometer, meteorological probe, digital barometer, and magnetometer. The oceanographic measurements include skin temperature, salinity, water temperature, water skin temperature, ocean currents, chlorophyll-a, CDOM concentration, red backscatter, fish biomass and dissolved oxygen. The atmospheric measurements consist of wind speed and direction, air temperature, relative humidity and air pressure. The physical measurements include tide direction and speed, magnetic field and water depth. All the data are in netCDF-CF (underway) format. These data are experimental and have not been quality controlled. There are known issues (offsets) in the sea surface salinity data and there might be unknown issues in other data variables. Users need to do quality control when using these data. These data are made available at the users own risk. The dataset will be updated as data are quality controlled and updated data become available.

This dataset contains currents, water temperature, salinity, and other variables taken by ADCP, TSG, and other instrumentation from the research vessel Mirai in the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas. In 2022, the R/V Mirai conducted hydrographic surveys in the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. This dataset includes preliminary data from the R/V Mirai 2022 Arctic cruise. Data and readme files were contained in the same directory. Some data or samples are still being processed and analyzed and will be submitted no later than two years after the cruise end. This cruise is U.S. State Department MSR U2022-002 as part of the World Data Service for Oceanography. Data are in various text formats.
