The biomass and species composition of tropical phytoplankton in Albatross Bay, Gulf of Carpentaria, northern Australia, were examined monthly for six years between March 1986 and April 1992. 26 cruises between 1986 and 1988 recorded the biomass and species composition of tropical zooplankton in Albatross Bay, Gulf of Carpentaria, Northern Australia. The initial data analysis was undertaken by Graham J B Ross between 20 November and 15 December 1999, where a significant number of errors, of various types where discovered and correction made. See attached metadata record REPORT.TXT. Zooplankton taxonomic groups were identified to species level where possible (from m6332.xls), with a primary focus on copepods, to produce the ESRI shape layer and m6332_copepods.xls. Data is stored as mean number of individuals per site. Sampling occurred across 5 sites (Site 1 = Inshore, Site 5 = Offshore, Sites progressed westward). Temperature and salinity were also recorded for many samples.

Phytoplankton pigment composition (chlorophyll a concentration) was measured in Albatross Bay, Gulf of Carpentaria, northern Australia. Four sites were sampled over six years between August 1986 and April 1992. In the last two years samples were taken at the bottom of the water column in addition to mid-depth.

Prawn larval densities were calculated from stepped oblique bottom to surface plankton tows. Salinity-temperature profiles were also recorded. Total zooplankton biomass levels were calculated from stepped oblique bottom to surface plankton tows, deployed during monthly cruises carried out at twenty-one stations in Albatross Bay, Gulf of Carpentaria. Cruises were undertaken between March 1986 and April 1992. Total zooplankton biomass were calculated as grams dry weight. Sampling used a stepped-oblique tow, using a 0.5 x 0.5 square metre frame with either a 140-142 micron mesh (sampler_code = 'A'), or a 250 micron mesh (sampler_code='E')
Phytoplankton sampling in the coastal waters of south eastern Tasmania

Phytoplankton was counted and identified from five sites over the 5-year period. Annual cycles in abundance are available (as cells mL-1), along with detailed species identification. Cell measurements and approximate geometric shape were also recorded for the calculation of biovolume (μL cell-1). Diatoms and dinoflagellates dominated the samples in terms of biomass, however, small cells were also very abundant throughout each year. The data are restricted to an integrated sample from the top 12 m of the water column. Fluorescence profiles elsewhere in this dataset can provide an indication of phytoplankton presence lower in the water column.
